Study in UK from Nepal Complete Free Guide 2026–27

The UK is one of the main study destinations for Nepali students: the Home Office issued 17,150 Student visas to Nepali nationals in the year to June 2026, with a 4.6% refusal rate (Home Office data via The PIE News). The biggest reason is time. A UK bachelor’s takes 3 years and most master’s degrees take 1, so you pay one or two fewer years of fees and living costs than in the USA, Canada or Australia.

After graduating you can stay on the Graduate Route and work in any job without a sponsor: 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027, 3 years after a PhD. From there, a Skilled Worker job can lead towards settlement.

Degree types

• Foundation year (1 year): a bridge into year 1 of a bachelor’s for students below direct entry.
• Bachelor’s (BSc/BA Hons, 3 years; 4 in Scotland): applied for through UCAS, with up to five choices.
• Top-up degree (1 year): turns an HND or diploma into a UK honours degree.
• Master’s (MSc, MBA, MA, LLM, usually 1 year): a common route for TU, KU and PU graduates.
• PhD (3–4 years): research degrees; graduates get a 3-year Graduate Route and may bring dependants.

University groups

• Russell Group (24 universities): research-intensive universities such as Imperial, UCL, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Sheffield. Expect higher grades and IELTS 6.5–7.0; MOI letters are generally not accepted. HOA has placed students across all 24 Russell Group universities.
• Red brick universities: historic civic universities with strong industry links.
• Modern (post-1992) universities: career-focused, usually lower fees, and the most likely to accept MOI letters.

Bachelor’s entry (NEB +2)

• Grades: often 60% or more in NEB Grade 12 (or the GPA equivalent each university publishes); some modern universities consider lower, and competitive courses ask much more.
• English: IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5) is common, or an MOI letter or strong English grade where the university accepts it. Study without IELTS
• How to apply: UCAS, up to five choices, one personal statement and one reference.
• Deadline: 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time for September 2027 courses (15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine and dentistry).

Master’s entry (TU, KU, PU and other recognised universities)

• Grades: a bachelor’s with about 50–60% (UK 2:2 equivalent) for most universities; 60–65%+ for many Russell Group courses.
• English: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) is common, or an MOI letter at universities that accept it. MOI university list
• How to apply: direct to each university with a statement of purpose, CV and references. HOA helps with every document free.
• Timing: admissions are rolling and popular courses can fill months before the start, so apply early.

Yes, at some universities and for selected courses. More than 25 UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from a Nepali college in place of IELTS, according to HOA’s partner data; there is no single official list, and universities change their rules each cycle.

It is not a UKVI rating: UKVI has published no list of university bands.

The order matters, because each step unlocks the next: offer, then NOC, then deposit and CAS, then the visa. For dated week-by-week plans, see the January 2027 and February 2027 guides.

1. Step 1 · NowBook a free HOA consultation and shortlist

   A counsellor checks your grades, English (IELTS or MOI), budget and goals, and shortlists three to five courses at universities HOA assesses as low-risk. Visit Putalisadak, Kathmandu or Chipledhunga, Pokhara, or WhatsApp +977-9802373936.

2. Step 2 · ApplySubmit your applications

   Undergraduate courses use UCAS (up to five choices; the 2027 deadline is 13 January 2027). Master’s applications go direct to each university. HOA helps with your statement of purpose or personal statement and references, free.

3. Step 3 · OfferAccept an offer and meet its conditions

   Send final results, English evidence and any documents the university asks for. Many universities run a credibility (pre-CAS) interview for applicants from Nepal; HOA runs free mock interviews.

4. Step 4 · NOCGet your No Objection Certificate

   Apply on noc.moest.gov.np with your offer letter (NPR 2,000, usually 1 to 5 working days). Your bank needs the NOC before it can send any tuition abroad, and you need it for the visa.

5. Step 5 · DepositPay the deposit and request your CAS

   Your bank sends the deposit to the university named on the NOC. The university then issues your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies), the reference you need to apply for the visa.

6. Step 6 · 28 daysHold the visa money for 28 days

   Keep unpaid first-year tuition plus living costs (from 30 November 2026: £10,827 outside London or £14,130 in London) in your account for 28 days in a row, ending no more than 31 days before you apply. Any Nepal Rastra Bank-regulated Class A commercial bank is acceptable.

7. Step 7 · VisaTB test, then apply for the Student visa

   Take the TB test at IOM (Kathmandu or Damak) or Norvic (Kathmandu). Apply online, pay £558 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,164 for a one-year master’s) and give biometrics at the visa centre in Kathmandu. Decisions usually take about 3 weeks; you get an eVisa, not a BRP card.

8. Step 8 · TravelPre-departure briefing and travel

   Book flights only after the visa is granted. HOA’s free pre-departure briefing covers arrival, enrolment, banking, GP registration and part-time work rules.

September is the main UK intake, January the second. A few universities also start courses in February and May. Each university sets its own deadlines and closes courses when they fill.

What it means for a Nepali applicant

A rating does not cancel a CAS you already hold, but at an Amber or Red university a squeezed CAS allocation can mean later or borderline applicants get no CAS, and some universities now run stricter credibility checks. Nepal’s own refusal rate was 4.6% in the year to June 2026, close to the 5% line, so universities watch Nepali applications closely.

1. Check the register of licensed student sponsors on GOV.UK (Register of licensed sponsors: students).
2. Ask the university in writing whether it can issue your CAS for your intake.

The No Objection Certificate from Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) is required for every Nepali student going abroad to study. You need it before your bank sends any tuition abroad and before your UK visa application.

How to get the NOC

1. Get your offer letter

   The NOC application needs the UK university’s offer letter. HOA helps you get it as part of the free service.

2. Register on the portal

   Create an account at noc.moest.gov.np.

3. Upload your documents

   Usually citizenship certificate, passport, academic certificates, the offer letter and English evidence.

4. Pay NPR 2,000

   The fee is paid online through the portal.

5. Download the certificate

   Usually 1 to 5 working days. Give it to your bank with the transfer request and keep it in your visa file.

Two numbers matter: what the year will cost you, and the visa money you must show in the bank. Both use UKVI’s living-cost rate, which rises for visa applications made on or after 30 November 2026 (HC 584).

One-year master’s: worked examples

With the other published fees, the same one-year total outside London is £32,958 (NPR 64.3 lakhs) at De Montfort’s lowest fee and £48,158 (NPR 93.9 lakhs) at Liverpool. A three-year bachelor’s outside London needs tuition plus about £14,436 a year to live, and £3,274 once for the visa fee and health surcharge. Flights, deposits and the TB test are extra.

Visa money: what the 28-day bank statement must show

Unpaid first-year tuition (shown on your CAS) plus living costs for up to 9 months, held for 28 consecutive days and ending within 31 days of your application (GOV.UK, Student visa: money).

Example: with the £19,950 Hertfordshire fee unpaid, you would show £30,777 outside London (NPR 60.0 lakhs). Every pound of tuition you pay before applying reduces this. Which banks in Nepal can you use?

UKVI publishes no approved-bank list for Nepal. The rule is that the account must be with an institution regulated by Nepal Rastra Bank that keeps electronic records (UKVI financial evidence guidance). All 20 of Nepal’s Class A commercial banks meet UKVI’s financial-evidence requirements, so you do not need to move your money. The list below is HOA’s own compilation against the Nepal Rastra Bank Class A register, not a UKVI publication.

One-off costs

• Student visa fee: £558 (about NPR 108,810) (GOV.UK)
• Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 a year plus £388 for any extra period of up to 6 months: £1,164 for a one-year master’s, £2,716 for a three-year bachelor’s (GOV.UK)
• NOC: NPR 2,000 (MoEST)
• TB test: USD 60 at IOM in Kathmandu or Damak, or NPR 7,800 at Norvic in Kathmandu; the certificate is valid for 6 months (GOV.UK, updated 2 Nov 2025). TB test guide

• Flights and accommodation deposit: vary by season, city and provider.

Students on degree courses can work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full-time during the university’s official vacations. The minimum wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour from April 2026 (GOV.UK).

Common part-time jobs

• Retail and supermarkets: flexible shifts; a common first job.
• Hospitality: restaurants, hotels and catering, often through community networks.
• Care and healthcare support: steady demand; suits nursing and health students.
• Campus jobs: library, student union and admin roles that fit around classes.
• Tech support: for computing and data students.

1. Student visa

• You need: a CAS, the 28-day bank statement, your NOC, a TB certificate and a valid passport. Student visa guide
• Cost: £558 plus the health surcharge (£1,164 for a one-year master’s).

2. Graduate Route (post-study work)

• Length: 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates who apply on or after 1 January 2027 (2 years if you applied by 31 December 2026); 3 years after a PhD (GOV.UK).
• Work: any job, any employer, no sponsor and no minimum salary.
• Cost: £937 application fee plus the health surcharge, usually £1,035 a year.

3. Skilled Worker visa

• Salary: usually at least £41,700 or the job’s going rate, whichever is higher (GOV.UK).
• Lower rate for graduates: if you switch from a Student or Graduate visa, you can be paid 70% of the going rate, at least £33,400, for up to 4 years in total including time on the Graduate visa (GOV.UK).
• Settlement: GOV.UK still lists indefinite leave to remain after 5 years on the Skilled Worker route; Student and Graduate time does not count. The government has consulted on a 10-year norm, so check the rules again before you plan around a date. Skilled Worker guide
