Medicines & Food
UK customs rules on food from Nepal: Do not bring fresh meat, eggs, fresh dairy, or fresh vegetables — these are banned. Packaged/dried spices, dried lentils (dal), packaged tea, and sealed processed food are generally allowed in small personal quantities. Check current UK Border Force rules before packing food items.
Pre-Departure FAQ for Nepali Students
Essential documents for UK entry: Passport + UK Student Visa vignette, BRP collection letter (UKVI), CAS letter, unconditional offer letter, accommodation booking, 28-day bank statements, IELTS/PTE certificate (if used), academic transcripts. UK Border Force may ask to see any of these. Keep originals in hand luggage, never checked baggage.
The BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) is your physical UK resident card. It confirms your right to study and work in the UK. You must collect it from the Post Office listed in your UKVI letter within 10 days of arriving in UK. Bring your passport. The BRP is essential for: opening a bank account, starting work, registering with a GP, and any future visa applications. Do not leave it at home after collecting.
First week priority order: (1) Collect BRP from Post Office (within 10 days). (2) University enrolment — get student ID. (3) UK SIM card — Smarty (£10/mo) at Argos or supermarkets. (4) Open bank account — Monzo app (10 min setup, no credit check, works immediately). (5) Apply for NI number at gov.uk. (6) Register with NHS GP. (7) Start job search on Indeed.co.uk.
