Student to citizen: ~6 years

The clearest pathway: For a 1-year Master’s student, the optimal path is: Master’s year (Student Visa, 1 year) + Graduate Route — 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years for those filed on or before 31 December 2026) = 5 years = ILR eligible. British citizenship 12 months later. HOA advises on career path alignment during pre-departure briefing to ensure students choose work experience during their degree that directly supports future Skilled Worker Visa eligibility.

What Nepali Students Should Know About the Graduate Route Visa

The Graduate Route Visa is the single biggest advantage the UK holds over most other study destinations. Two full years of unrestricted work — no employer requirements, no minimum salary, no sector restriction. You can work as a barista while looking for a finance job. You can do a professional qualification (ACCA, CFA, CIMA) while working part-time in your field. You can work for multiple employers simultaneously.

Critical rule: You must apply for the Graduate Route before your Student Visa expires. You cannot apply from outside the UK. Students who graduate and travel home before applying lose their eligibility. HOA reminds all students of this in the pre-departure briefing.

Which Careers Lead to Skilled Worker Visas Fastest?

Based on HOA’s experience placing 5,000+ Nepali students, these sectors offer the fastest path to Skilled Worker sponsorship from graduate level:

NHS/Healthcare: The most reliable path. NHS Band 4 and 5 roles (Healthcare Assistant escalating to Registered Nurse) are in permanent shortage. Salary thresholds are lower than the standard £38,700. Many Nepali graduates who worked as HCAs during their degree transition directly to Skilled Worker NHS sponsorship.

Social Care: Care home management and senior care worker roles qualify under shortage occupations at £23,200. Not aspirational but highly reliable for ILR pathway.

IT and Technology: Software developers, data analysts, cybersecurity analysts, and IT project managers typically meet the £38,700 threshold within 1–2 years of graduation, especially in London and South East England.

Finance and Accounting: ACCA/CIMA-qualified accountants typically exceed £38,700 within 2–3 years. Graduate Route years are ideal for completing professional qualifications alongside work.

Teaching: Secondary school teachers in shortage subjects (Maths, Physics, Computer Science) qualify at ~£31,000+. Schools actively sponsor under the Skilled Worker route.

The Life in the UK Test — What Nepali Graduates Need to Know

The Life in the UK test is a 24-question computer test on British history, values, and culture. Required for both ILR and British citizenship. Pass mark: 18/24 correct. The official study materials are a single book: “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.” Most candidates pass with 2–4 weeks of study. The test costs £50 and is available at test centres across the UK.

Does Nepal Allow Dual Citizenship?

Nepal’s citizenship legislation is evolving. The Constitution of Nepal 2015 and subsequent Citizenship Act 2063 (2006) restricted dual citizenship, with exceptions. The situation is legally complex and policy has been debated. HOA strongly recommends that any Nepali student planning to pursue British citizenship consult with Nepal’s Department of Passport and a qualified immigration lawyer about current dual citizenship rules at the time of their British citizenship application. HOA does not provide immigration legal advice on this specific question.

The Graduate Route Visa (also called Post-Study Work Visa). 2 years for Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates, 3 years for PhD graduates. Standard minimum: £38,700/year (from April 2024). Shortage occupations have lower thresholds: NHS Registered Nurse (~£29,970), Senior Care Worker (~£23,200), Secondary School Teacher (~£31,000+). You also need a job offer from a UK licensed Skilled Worker sponsor. Most Nepali graduates working in NHS, IT, finance, and engineering reach £38,700 within 1–3 years of graduation.

five qualifying years on the Skilled Worker route (time on a Student visa or the Graduate Route does not count toward that clock). Student Visa years count. Example: 1-year Master’s + Graduate Route (18mo–2yr) + 2-year Skilled Worker = 5 years total = ILR eligible. Or: 3-year Bachelor’s + Graduate Route (18mo–2yr) = 5 years. British citizenship: 12 months after ILR. Total student to citizen: approximately 6 years for most routes.

Yes. Skilled Worker Visa holders can sponsor dependants (spouse and children under 18) to join them in the UK. Requirements: your salary must meet the financial threshold (£29,000+ minimum for dependants, higher for multiple dependants), and dependants need their own visa applications. After ILR, family members who have lived with you can also apply for ILR. Dependants of Graduate Route Visa holders may also be eligible — check current UKVI rules as policy changes.

Why Nepali Students Choose the UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is a popular higher-education destination for Nepali students. A UK bachelor’s degree typically takes three years and a taught master’s one year, which can reduce the total years of study compared with four-year systems elsewhere. Several UK universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL — rank in the global top tier, and more than 40 UK institutions appear in the QS World University Rankings top 200 (QS World University Rankings). Tuition varies by course and university and is listed on each university page; House of Admissions matches each student to programmes that fit their budget and academic profile.

The UK Student Visa, governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules, permits up to 20 hours of paid work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations (UK Home Office, gov.uk/student-visa), helping students offset living costs. The required 28-day maintenance balance is £10,539 for study outside London (≈ NPR 20.5 lakhs at NPR 195/£1) or £13,761 for London (≈ NPR 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files, with a reported 99% approval rate across applications it has supported (self-reported).

Living costs vary by city. Per HESA and UCAS estimates, students in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Loughborough typically budget around NPR 14–22 lakhs per year, compared with NPR 25 lakhs or more in London. Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter instead of IELTS — saving up to NPR 35,000 in examination and preparation costs and 2–3 months of preparation, where the chosen university accepts MOI.

After graduation, the Graduate Route grants unrestricted work with no job offer or sponsor required (UK Home Office, gov.uk/graduate-visa). Its length depends on when the Graduate Route application is filed, not on the course dates: 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years only for those filed on or before 31 December 2026 (PhD graduates keep 3 years either way). Because a student beginning a UK course now will file well after that cutoff, the 18-month figure is the realistic planning number. Graduate Route time does not count toward the standard 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock; the usual path is Graduate Route → switch to the Skilled Worker visa at the £38,700 salary threshold → Indefinite Leave to Remain after five qualifying years on the Skilled Worker route.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016 (self-reported), including 50+ Chevening placements (funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial awards), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Scholarship matching is included in HOA’s free service. Schools, colleges and organisations in Nepal can offer HOA’s UK guidance to their communities through a free partnership arrangement.
