Section 01 — Definition

What is the UK Graduate Route Visa (PSW Visa)?

The UK Graduate Route Visa — officially named the Graduate Route and widely known as the PSW visa (Post-Study Work visa) — is the UK government's post-graduation immigration route that lets international students stay and work in the UK after completing an eligible degree. Introduced in July 2021, it replaced the former Tier 1 Post-Study Work visa that had closed in 2012.

PSW stands for Post-Study Work. If you search for "PSW visa UK", "post study work visa UK", or "graduate visa UK", all three terms refer to the same immigration route: the Graduate Route. The Home Office uses "Graduate Route" as the official name; students and advisors commonly say "PSW visa".

Why Nepal students choose the UK over Australia, Canada, or USA: A 1-year Masters in the UK + 2-year Graduate Route (PSW) = 3 years of UK experience for the cost of 1 year of study. Australia and Canada require 1.5–2 year Master's degrees. The USA restricts post-study work to STEM fields only. The UK Graduate Route has no sector restriction, no minimum salary, and no employer sponsor requirement.

The Graduate Route is a completely new visa — not an extension of your Student visa. You apply from within the UK, on a dedicated online portal, after graduating. Your Student visa must still be valid at the time of application, and you must be physically present in the UK to apply.

Since its introduction, the Graduate Route has seen over 100,000 applications granted annually. It has become the primary reason international graduates — including thousands of Nepali alumni — choose to remain in the UK to build their careers and ultimately apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and UK settlement.

HOA's role: House of Admissions provides free end-to-end guidance on choosing UKVI-licensed universities with full Graduate Route eligibility, planning the application timeline, and mapping the pathway from Graduate Route to Skilled Worker to ILR. Over 5,000+ Nepali students have been placed by HOA, with a 99% visa success rate.

Critical 2027 Change — Graduate Route Reducing to 18 Months

The UK government has confirmed — through the October 2025 Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules — that from 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route (PSW visa) for Bachelor's and Master's graduates will be reduced from 2 years to 18 months. PhD graduates retain 3 years unchanged. This is the most significant change to the Graduate Route since its introduction in 2021.

What this means for Nepali students graduating in 2026: If you begin a 1-year Masters in September 2025 and graduate in September 2026, you should apply for the Graduate Route immediately upon graduation — before December 2026 — to receive the full 2-year PSW visa. Most September-intake students can still get 2 years if they act promptly. HOA advisors can map your exact timeline during a free consultation.

PhD graduates are unaffected: If you are considering a PhD degree (typically 3 years), your post-study work rights remain at 3 years regardless of whether you apply before or after January 2027. This makes PhD study even more strategically valuable for Nepali students planning long-term UK careers. HOA can advise on funded PhD routes at UK universities.

Section 03

Who Qualifies for the UK Graduate Route (PSW) Visa?

Eligibility for the Graduate Route is straightforward but specific. Understanding these requirements before choosing your UK university is critical — HOA always verifies Graduate Route eligibility for every university before submitting your application.

You Qualify If:

  • Completed an eligible Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD at a UKVI-licensed UK university
  • Your university holds Graduate Route sponsor permission (all major universities do)
  • You hold a valid UK Student Route visa (Tier 4)
  • You are physically inside the UK when you apply
  • You apply before your Student visa expires
  • You have never previously been granted a Graduate Route visa

You Do NOT Qualify If:

  • Your institution is a private college without Graduate Route permission
  • You studied below degree level (FE college, diploma, English language)
  • Your Student visa has already expired
  • You are outside the UK at the time of application
  • You have previously held a Graduate Route visa
  • You are a student dependant (not the main student)

University selection is critical: All Russell Group universities, most post-1992 universities, and the vast majority of HOA's 153 UK partner universities hold full Graduate Route permission. HOA verifies this for every student as part of the free application service. Never accept a university offer without checking this — ask your HOA counsellor to confirm.

Duration by qualification level (applications made before 31 December 2026):

  • Bachelor's degree graduates: 2 years on Graduate Route (PSW) visa
  • Master's degree graduates (1-year or 2-year): 2 years on Graduate Route visa
  • PGCE / professional master's: 2 years on Graduate Route visa
  • PhD / Doctoral degree graduates: 3 years on Graduate Route visa (unchanged after 2027)
  • Foundation year / pre-sessional English: Not eligible — degree level only
  • Diploma or HND only: Not eligible unless completed alongside an eligible degree
Section 04 — Process

How to Apply for the UK Graduate Route Visa (Step by Step)

The Graduate Route application is entirely online, done from within the UK. Unlike your original Student visa application, you need no bank statements, no financial evidence, and no job offer. The process has six steps:

1
During final term

Confirm Degree Completion with Your University

Ask your university's international student office to confirm your degree completion to UKVI via the Sponsorship Management System (SMS). This happens automatically for most students but allow 4–6 weeks. Do not apply for the Graduate Route before this confirmation is registered, or your application will be refused.

2
Up to 3 months before Student visa expiry

Apply Online at gov.uk/graduate-visa

Complete the Graduate Route online application form at gov.uk. You need your passport, BRP card (or eVisa details), current UK address, and university CAS details. No bank statements are required. The form takes 30–45 minutes to complete. You must be inside the UK when you submit the form.

3
Pay online — updated April 2026

Pay £937 Visa Fee + Immigration Health Surcharge

Pay the £937 Graduate Route application fee (updated from 8 April 2026) plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,035 per year online. Masters/Bachelor's graduates pay £2,070 IHS (2 years). PhD graduates pay £3,105 IHS (3 years). Total for Masters: £3,007 (approximately NPR 5.9 lakhs at £1 = NPR 195).

4
In person — UK only

UKVCAS Biometric Appointment in the UK

Book and attend a UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) appointment at a service point in your UK city to provide updated biometrics — fingerprints and photograph. This is done in the UK, not at VFS Nepal. Appointments are typically available within 1–2 weeks. Fees range from £75 to £150 depending on location and service level.

5
4–8 weeks standard

Wait for UKVI Decision

Standard Graduate Route processing takes 4–8 weeks. Priority Service (additional ~£500) gives a decision within 5 working days — recommended if your Student visa expires soon. While waiting, you can continue to work under your original Student visa conditions. You will receive your decision by email, with a new BRP or eVisa update.

6
Graduate Route granted!

Start Working — Any Job, Any Employer

Once your Graduate Route visa is granted, you can work full-time, unlimited hours, for any employer in the UK — no job offer needed, no sponsor required, no salary minimum, any industry. Your 2-year (or 18-month / 3-year) clock begins from the visa approval date. You can also be self-employed or freelance immediately.

Do not leave the UK before applying: If you travel outside the UK — including back to Nepal — before submitting your Graduate Route application, you permanently lose your eligibility. Apply first, receive your new visa, then travel freely. Many students make this mistake during graduation celebrations. HOA reminds all students of this before they graduate.

Documents needed for the Graduate Route application:

  • Valid passport (must not expire during the visa period)
  • Current Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or eVisa reference number
  • UK residential address (your current accommodation in the UK)
  • Confirmation from your university that degree completion has been reported to UKVI
  • Bank statements — NOT required
  • Job offer letter — NOT required
  • Tuberculosis test — NOT required

TOTAL — Masters Graduate (2 yrs, standard) £3,007 ≈ NPR 5.86 lakhs £937 fee + £2,070 IHS. UKVCAS fee additional (~£75–150). Does not include Priority Service.
TOTAL — PhD Graduate (3 yrs, standard) £4,042 ≈ NPR 7.88 lakhs £937 fee + £3,105 IHS. UKVCAS fee additional.

Return on investment: Working full-time at UK National Minimum Wage (£12.71/hr, April 2026) for 37.5 hours/week across 2 years = approximately £49,560 gross earnings (≈ NPR 96.6 lakhs). The total visa cost is £3,007 — a 16× return on your visa investment before accounting for career experience, professional networks, and the Skilled Worker pathway to UK settlement.

For students applying from Jan 2027 (18-month visa): The IHS for 18 months is approximately £1,552.50 (£1,035 × 1.5). Application fee remains £937. Total would be approximately £2,489 — slightly lower due to the shorter duration, but with 6 months less time to find a Skilled Worker sponsor. HOA recommends applying under current (2-year) rules wherever possible.

Section 06

UK Graduate Route Visa — Work Rights and Restrictions

The Graduate Route (PSW visa) provides the most flexible work rights of any UK immigration category below skilled worker level. Here is exactly what you can and cannot do:

  • Work full-time (unlimited hours) for any UK employer — no weekly cap, no restriction
  • Hold multiple jobs simultaneously — e.g., main professional role plus part-time shift work
  • Work in any industry at any skill level — entry-level hospitality to senior IT, healthcare, or finance roles
  • Work for employers without a UKVI sponsor licence — small businesses, local shops, startups can all hire you
  • Be self-employed or freelance — unlike the Student visa, Graduate Route permits self-employment from day one
  • Switch employers at any time — no notification to the Home Office, no visa amendment required
  • Earn any salary — no minimum salary requirement on the Graduate Route itself
  • Travel in and out of the UK freely — once you hold the Graduate Route visa
  • Cannot work as a doctor or dentist in training — these require specific professional visa routes
  • Cannot work as a professional sportsperson or coach — requires a specific sporting route
  • Cannot extend the Graduate Route — it cannot be renewed or extended under any circumstance
  • Graduate Route time does not count towards ILR — the ILR clock only starts from the Skilled Worker visa

Graduate Route vs Student visa work rights: On your Student visa you were limited to 20 hours per week during term time (≈ £1,017/month at £12.71/hr in 2026). On the Graduate Route, you work unlimited hours — a full-time worker at NMW earns approximately £24,780/year (≈ NPR 48.3 lakhs), compared to roughly £12,000/year part-time on a Student visa.

For further reading on part-time earnings during your Student visa period before graduation, see HOA's guide to part-time work in UK for students.

Key 2026 reference figures: UK National Minimum Wage = £12.71/hour (April 2026). Full-time (37.5 hrs/week × 52 weeks) at NMW = £24,784/year ≈ NPR 48.3 lakhs. London salaries typically run 15–25% above these figures. A £30,000 gross salary yields approximately £23,800 net (after income tax and National Insurance). Switch from Graduate Route to Skilled Worker Visa — Pathway to UK ILR

The Graduate Route is not a destination — it is a strategic stepping stone. The ultimate goal for most Nepali graduates who plan a long-term UK career is the Skilled Worker Visa, followed by Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). The Graduate Route gives you 2 years (or 18 months after 2027) to gain work experience and find a qualifying employer.

Study in UK

Skilled Worker
5 years
£38,700+ salary
ILR / Settlement

Requirements to switch from Graduate Route to Skilled Worker Visa:

  • Find a job with a UK employer who holds a UKVI Sponsor Licence
  • The role must be at RQF Level 3 or above (equivalent to A-level; covers most professional, technical, and graduate roles)
  • Salary must meet the minimum threshold of £38,700 per year (2024 rate, from April 2024) or the "going rate" for the specific occupation code — whichever is higher
  • Your employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) — a unique reference number for your Skilled Worker application
  • Apply online from within the UK — you do not need to leave the UK or return to Nepal to switch visas
  • NHS, education, and some shortage occupation roles may qualify at lower salary thresholds — HOA can advise on your specific role

Real timeline for a Nepali student (1-year Masters, Sep 2026 intake):
Sep 2026 — Arrive in UK for 1-year Masters programme.
Sep 2027 — Graduate Route visa applied and granted (2 years, under current rules).
2027–2028 — Build UK work experience, target Skilled Worker-eligible employer (£38,700+).
Sep 2029 — Switch to Skilled Worker Visa (5-year qualifying period begins).
Sep 2034 — Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
Sep 2035 — Eligible for British Citizenship application.
Total from arrival to citizenship eligibility: approximately 9 years.

Impact of the 2027 reduction on Skilled Worker planning: Students who graduate in 2027 or later and receive only 18 months on the Graduate Route will have approximately 12–15 months (allowing time to apply before visa expiry) to find a £38,700+ Skilled Worker role. This requires early career planning. HOA's advisors help students identify sponsorship-ready employers and career sectors before they even arrive in the UK. Read more at our Skilled Worker Visa guide.

Section 09

UK Graduate Route vs Post-Study Work in Other Countries (2026)

Nepal students frequently ask HOA to compare post-study work rights across popular study destinations. Here is an objective comparison as of 2026 — even with the 2027 reduction, the UK Graduate Route remains highly competitive:

Feature 🇬🇧 UK 🇦🇺 Australia 🇨🇦 Canada 🇺🇸 USA
Post-study visa name Graduate Route (PSW) Graduate Temp. Visa (485) PGWP OPT / STEM OPT
Duration (Masters) — 2026 2 years (18 mo from Jan 2027) 2–4 years Up to 3 years 1 yr (3 yr STEM)
Job offer required? Not required Not required Not required STEM: must apply
Minimum salary on post-study visa None Yes (AWR rate) None Yes (STEM only)
Self-employment allowed? Yes — full rights Yes Yes No
Masters study duration 1 year 1.5–2 years 1–2 years 1.5–2 years
Tuition fees (Masters) typical £14,000–25,000/yr AUD 35–55k/yr CAD 20–40k/yr USD 30–60k/yr
Total cost (study + first visa) NPR NPR 30–55 lakhs NPR 60–90 lakhs NPR 45–70 lakhs NPR 90–140 lakhs
Path to permanent residency Skilled Worker → ILR SkillSelect / State PR Express Entry Very complex / slow

HOA's honest assessment: Even with the 2027 reduction, the UK Graduate Route remains the most cost-efficient pathway for Nepali students. A 1-year Masters costs 30–50% less than Australia or Canada equivalents. The structured Skilled Worker → ILR pathway is clearer than Australia's points-heavy SkillSelect or Canada's Express Entry. For students seeking maximum UK exposure at minimum cost, the UK win is decisive in 2026.

For a deeper comparison of the UK vs USA specifically for Nepali students, read HOA's UK vs USA comparison guide. For university selection guidance, see our graduate employability university rankings.

Section 10 — 12 Questions

UK Graduate Route (PSW) Visa — Frequently Asked Questions

The UK Graduate Route Visa — also called the PSW (Post-Study Work) visa — is a post-graduation immigration route that lets international students who completed an eligible degree at a UKVI-licensed UK university stay and work in the UK for 2 years (Bachelor's or Master's) or 3 years (PhD). No job offer, no employer sponsor, and no minimum salary is required. It was introduced in July 2021 and has become the primary reason international graduates choose UK study over Australia or Canada.
Yes — completely the same. PSW stands for Post-Study Work. The official Home Office name is "Graduate Route" or "Graduate Visa." Students, universities, and immigration lawyers all use both terms interchangeably. Whether you search "PSW visa UK," "graduate route visa," or "post study work visa UK," you are looking for the same immigration route.
From 8 April 2026, the Graduate Route application fee is £937 (previously £822). Add the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,035 per year. For a 2-year Masters/Bachelor's visa: £937 + £2,070 = £3,007 total (≈ NPR 5.86 lakhs). For a 3-year PhD visa: £937 + £3,105 = £4,042 total (≈ NPR 7.88 lakhs). UKVCAS biometric fees (£75–150) are charged separately in the UK.
Yes — confirmed. The UK government's October 2025 Statement of Changes confirmed that Graduate Route applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027 will receive 18 months for Bachelor's and Master's graduates (down from 2 years). PhD graduates retain 3 years. Applications submitted on or before 31 December 2026 still receive the full 2-year permission under current rules. This makes the December 2026 deadline critically important for September 2026 intake students.
Absolutely yes. No job offer is required for the Graduate Route. You apply based solely on having completed an eligible degree at a UKVI-licensed UK university. Once granted, you search for work freely — any employer, any job, any sector, any salary. This is the defining advantage of the Graduate Route over the USA's OPT visa, which requires immediate employer sponsorship.
Apply as soon as your university confirms degree completion to UKVI (typically 4–6 weeks after your final submission or exam results). You can apply up to 3 months before your Student visa expires. You must be inside the UK when you apply — if you leave for Nepal before applying, you permanently lose eligibility. For September 2026 students wanting the full 2-year PSW: apply by late November or December 2026 at the latest.
Yes. You can apply for the Skilled Worker Visa from within the UK without returning to Nepal, provided your Graduate Route visa is still valid at the time of application. Your employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), and you apply online. The Skilled Worker minimum salary threshold from 2024 is £38,700 per year (or the going rate for your occupation code, whichever is higher). NHS and education workers may qualify at lower thresholds — ask HOA about your specific role.
No. Time on the Graduate Route does not count towards the 5-year qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). The ILR clock begins only when you switch to the Skilled Worker Visa (or another qualifying long-term route). Typical pathway: Graduate Route (build experience) → Skilled Worker (5 qualifying years) → ILR application.
Yes — self-employment and freelancing are permitted on the Graduate Route. This is a significant advantage over the Student visa, which prohibits self-employment. On the Graduate Route you can set up as a sole trader, offer freelance services, or run a small business. You cannot, however, use the Graduate Route to work as a professional sportsperson or as a doctor or dentist in training.
Yes — once your Graduate Route visa is approved, you can travel freely in and out of the UK, including visiting Nepal, as long as your visa remains valid. The key restriction is before application: if you leave the UK before submitting your Graduate Route application, you lose eligibility permanently. Apply first; travel freely after.
No. The Graduate Route visa cannot be extended under any circumstances. Once the 2-year (or 18-month / 3-year) period ends, you must switch to another eligible visa — most commonly the Skilled Worker Visa — or leave the UK. You also cannot apply for a second Graduate Route visa; each person is entitled to the Graduate Route only once in their lifetime.

Why Nepali Students Choose UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is Nepal’s most popular study abroad destination. A UK Bachelor’s degree takes just 3 years (versus 4 in the US or Australia), making it more cost-efficient per year of study. The UK is home to 4 of the world’s top 10 universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL), and over 40 UK universities feature in the global QS top 200. For Nepali students, the total cost of a 1-year Master’s in the UK ranges from NPR 55–82 lakhs all-in (tuition, living costs, and visa) at NPR 195/£1 — with Sheffield and Liverpool among the most affordable destinations.

The UK Student Visa (as governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules) allows up to 20 hours of part-time work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations, enabling students to offset living costs. The mandatory 28-day bank balance is £10,539 for universities outside London (NPR ≈ 20.5 lakhs) and £13,761 for London (NPR ≈ 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files with a 99% approval rate. Students choosing universities in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield pay NPR 13–20 lakhs per year in living costs, compared to NPR 25+ lakhs in London.

Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University, or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via Medium of Instruction (MOI) letters instead of IELTS — saving NPR 25,000+ in examination fees and up to 3 months of preparation time. HOA provides free MOI eligibility checks at both offices. After graduation, the Graduate Route Visa grants 2 years of unrestricted work rights with no job offer or sponsor required, per UK Home Office policy (gov.uk/graduate-visa). A switch to the Skilled Worker Visa at the £38,700 salary threshold leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years of qualifying UK residence.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016, including 50+ Chevening placements (fully funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial award), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Every HOA student receives personalised scholarship matching as part of the free service. Institutions and businesses wishing to provide HOA’s UK guidance to their student communities are welcome to enquire about a free partnership arrangement. Two offices serve all of Nepal: HOA Kathmandu at Putalisadak (main office), and HOA Pokhara at Trade Mall, Chipledhunga. Book a free consultation at either office →
