Critical: Using the Wrong Bank Causes Automatic Visa Refusal

UKVI will refuse your UK Student Visa application if your 28-day bank statement is from a bank not on the approved list — regardless of whether the balance amount is correct. There are no exceptions. This is one of the most common — and entirely preventable — causes of visa refusal for Nepali students. Always verify your bank is on this list before starting the 28-day holding period.

The 28-Day Rule — Exactly How It Works

The full required balance must be present in your account on every single day of a 28-consecutive-day period. The period must end no more than 31 days before your visa application date. Any withdrawal that drops the balance below the threshold — even for one day — resets the entire 28-day count. Do not make any withdrawals or transfers during this period.

Can the account be in a parent's name? Yes — the balance can be held in the student's account or in a parent's or legal guardian's account. If using a parent's account, you must submit a covering letter from the account holder confirming the funds are for your study. The account must still be at one of the 12 approved banks above.

Step-by-Step Process

How to Use a UKVI-Approved Bank for Your UK Student Visa

Follow these five steps precisely. Errors at any stage — especially steps 2 and 3 — are the most common cause of preventable visa refusals.

1

Confirm your bank is on the approved list

Cross-reference your bank against the 12 approved institutions above. If your current savings are in a non-approved bank, transfer them to an approved account before starting the 28-day period. Allow 2–3 working days for inter-bank transfers to clear in Nepal.

2

Deposit the full required balance in one account

Deposit the complete required amount into a single account at one UKVI-approved bank — either £10,539 (outside London) or £13,761 (London). UKVI does not accept split balances across two accounts. Ensure the NPR equivalent covers exchange rate movements: deposit a small buffer above the requirement if possible.

3

Hold the balance continuously for 28 days

Do not make any withdrawals, transfers, or payments from this account during the 28-day period. Set calendar reminders. If any transaction drops the balance below the threshold — even for a single day — the 28-day clock resets to zero. Plan your 28-day window to end no more than 31 days before your visa application date.

4

Obtain the official certified bank statement

After the 28-day period completes, visit your bank branch and request a certified bank statement showing every transaction and daily balance across the full 28-day period. The statement must be on bank letterhead, signed and stamped by the bank, and dated within 31 days of your visa application. HOA reviews bank statements for free before submission — contact us to check yours. See the full bank balance guide.

5

Upload the statement with your visa application

Your certified bank statement is a mandatory document in your UK Student Visa application. Upload the PDF scan alongside your CAS number, passport, tuberculosis test result, and other supporting documents. HOA provides free visa document review and application checking before you submit.

Common Mistakes

5 Bank Balance Mistakes Nepali Students Make

These mistakes cause preventable visa refusals every intake cycle. Read each one before submitting your application.

Using a bank not on the UKVI list

Many popular Nepali banks — including Nabil Bank, Everest Bank, and Agriculture Development Bank — are not on the UKVI-approved list. Using any of these, regardless of balance amount, causes automatic refusal. Always check this list first.

Making any transaction during the 28 days

Even a small payment — ATM withdrawal, mobile transfer, utility payment — that drops the balance below the threshold for a single day restarts the entire 28-day count. Keep the account completely untouched for the full 28-day period.

Splitting balance across two accounts

UKVI requires the full required balance in a single account at one institution. Students cannot combine £5,000 in RBB with £5,539 in NIC ASIA. The entire amount must be in one account, in one bank, for the full 28 days.

Using an internet banking screenshot instead of certified statement

UKVI requires an official bank statement issued by the bank — not a screenshot or PDF downloaded from online banking. The statement must be on bank letterhead, dated, signed, and stamped. Visit the branch to obtain the correct document.

Starting the 28 days too early

The 28-day period must end no more than 31 days before your visa application date. If you complete the 28 days in April but apply in June, the statement is out of the valid window. Time your 28-day period precisely against your planned visa application date.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions — UKVI-Approved Banks Nepal

The 12 UKVI-approved banks in Nepal are: Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB), Nepal Bangladesh Bank (NBB), Standard Chartered Bank Nepal, Global IME Bank, Sunrise Bank, NMB Bank, NIC ASIA Bank, Sanima Bank, Civil Bank, Nepal Credit and Commerce Bank (NCC), Bank of Kathmandu Lumbini (BOK), and Prabhu Bank. Only these 12 are recognised by UKVI for the 28-day bank balance requirement.
You need £10,539 (approximately NPR 20.5 lakhs) for universities outside London, or £13,761 (approximately NPR 26.8 lakhs) for London universities, based on the exchange rate of NPR 195 = £1. This full amount must be held continuously for 28 consecutive days in a single account at one of the 12 approved banks.
Your UK Student Visa application will be refused — even if the balance amount is correct. UKVI makes no exceptions for non-approved financial institutions. The refusal goes on your visa history and can affect future applications. This is entirely preventable by checking this list before starting your 28-day period.
Yes. The balance can be in the student's account or in a parent's or legal guardian's account. If using a parent's account, you must include a signed letter from the account holder confirming they are providing financial support for your study. The account must still be at one of the 12 UKVI-approved banks.
The balance must be at or above the required threshold on every single day of the 28-day period. It does not need to be exactly the same amount each day — it just cannot drop below £10,539 (outside London) or £13,761 (London) on any day. Having a slightly higher balance than required is fine.
Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) is widely recommended — it is government-owned, has branches in all 7 Nepal provinces, also offers Nepal's lowest education loan rate at 5.97%, and bank staff are experienced with UK student visa documentation. NIC ASIA Bank and Global IME Bank are strong alternatives for students in Kathmandu or Pokhara due to their digital services and branch networks.
No. UKVI requires the full required balance in a single account at one approved institution. You cannot combine balances from two different accounts or two different banks. The entire £10,539 or £13,761 must be in one account for the full 28 consecutive days.
Visit your branch and request an official certified bank statement covering the full 28-day period. The statement must: show your full name and account number, list daily balances across all 28 days, be on bank letterhead with a bank signature and stamp, and be dated within 31 days of your visa application. Why Nepali Students Choose UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is Nepal’s most popular study abroad destination. A UK Bachelor’s degree takes just 3 years (versus 4 in the US or Australia), making it more cost-efficient per year of study. The UK is home to 4 of the world’s top 10 universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL), and over 40 UK universities feature in the global QS top 200. For Nepali students, the total cost of a 1-year Master’s in the UK ranges from NPR 55–82 lakhs all-in (tuition, living costs, and visa) at NPR 195/£1 — with Sheffield and Liverpool among the most affordable destinations.

The UK Student Visa (as governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules) allows up to 20 hours of part-time work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations, enabling students to offset living costs. The mandatory 28-day bank balance is £10,539 for universities outside London (NPR ≈ 20.5 lakhs) and £13,761 for London (NPR ≈ 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files with a 99% approval rate. Students choosing universities in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield pay NPR 13–20 lakhs per year in living costs, compared to NPR 25+ lakhs in London.

Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University, or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via Medium of Instruction (MOI) letters instead of IELTS — saving NPR 25,000+ in examination fees and up to 3 months of preparation time. HOA provides free MOI eligibility checks at both offices. After graduation, the Graduate Route Visa grants 2 years of unrestricted work rights with no job offer or sponsor required, per UK Home Office policy (gov.uk/graduate-visa). A switch to the Skilled Worker Visa at the £38,700 salary threshold leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years of qualifying UK residence.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016, including 50+ Chevening placements (fully funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial award), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Every HOA student receives personalised scholarship matching as part of the free service. Institutions and businesses wishing to provide HOA’s UK guidance to their student communities are welcome to enquire about a free partnership arrangement.
