Planning your UK application from Nepal

Whatever route you take, four things decide whether a UK application succeeds from Nepal, and none of them is your grades alone. English evidence: over 25 UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter from Tribhuvan, Kathmandu, Pokhara or Purbanchal instead of IELTS, saving up to NPR 35,000 — though Russell Group universities generally still require IELTS, and NMC nursing registration always does. Money: you must hold GBP 10,539 outside London or GBP 13,761 for London for 28 consecutive days, at any Nepal Rastra Bank-regulated Class A commercial bank; UKVI publishes no approved-bank list for Nepal, so all 20 qualify. Paperwork: the NOC from MoEST is mandatory for every Nepali student going abroad and must be issued before any overseas tuition transfer. Afterwards: the Graduate Route gives 18 months of unrestricted work for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, or 2 years if filed on or before 31 December 2026, with 3 years for PhD graduates.

House of Admissions guides all of it at no cost to students — we are paid a referral commission by partner universities when a student enrols, never by the student. To be precise about compliance: HOA follows UKVI-compliant guidance and AQF-aligned practice, holds no UKVI certification and no AQF registration (neither exists for education agents), and all 20+ counsellors individually hold the British Council’s UK Agent and Counsellor Training Certification Award.

Choosing a UK course subject from Nepal

Subject choice affects more than what you study. It determines your entry requirements, your tuition band, whether an MOI letter will be accepted in place of IELTS, and in some fields whether you can practise professionally in the UK at all. Three things are worth settling before you shortlist universities.

1. Your Bachelor’s subject decides which doors are open

UK master’s admissions are subject-sensitive in a way Nepali applicants often underestimate. An LLM normally requires a law degree; MSc Nursing requires an existing nursing qualification plus NMC-level English. By contrast, MSc Management, MSc Business Analytics and conversion MSc Computer Science programmes are explicitly designed to take graduates from other disciplines. If your target subject differs from your Bachelor’s, look for the word “conversion” in the programme description.

2. English requirements vary by subject, not just by university

Over 25 UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter from Tribhuvan, Kathmandu, Pokhara and Purbanchal graduates instead of IELTS, saving up to NPR 35,000 and 2–3 months. But this is a per-programme decision: Russell Group universities generally still require IELTS, and NMC nursing registration always requires IELTS Academic 7.0 (R/L/S) and 6.5 (W) or OET Grade B regardless of MOI. Confirm before you rely on it.

3. Cost varies far more by subject than most applicants expect

Taught master’s tuition ranges from about GBP 14,000 to over GBP 45,000 depending on subject and institution, with MBAs and clinical programmes at the top of that range. Adding living costs of GBP 10,539 outside London or GBP 13,761 in London, the GBP 558 visa fee and GBP 776 per year Immigration Health Surcharge, a one-year master’s at an HOA partner university typically totals NPR 43–59 lakhs at the Nepal Rastra Bank reference rate of NPR 195 per GBP.

4. Post-study work is the same across every subject

The Graduate Route does not vary by discipline. It requires no job offer or employer sponsor, and its length is set by when you file the application rather than by your course: 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, 2 years for those filed on or before 31 December 2026, and 3 years for PhD graduates. Graduate Route time does not count toward the five-year Skilled Worker settlement clock.

House of Admissions shortlists programmes against your actual transcript, budget and career goal at no cost to you. Book a free consultation in Kathmandu or Pokhara, Sunday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no single best subject — the right course is the one your existing degree qualifies you for, that you can afford including living costs, and that leads to work you want. For Nepali students the highest-volume choices are business and management, computing and IT, nursing and healthcare, engineering, and data science. If your bachelor's is in a different field, look at conversion master's, which accept students from any discipline.

Nursing and healthcare has the clearest route because the NHS recruits continuously and the shortage occupation list keeps salary thresholds lower. Computing, data science and engineering also perform well. Bear in mind that staying to work needs either the Graduate Route, which is unrestricted, or a Skilled Worker visa, which needs a sponsoring employer and a salary at or above £38,700 unless the role is on the shortage list.

Postgraduate tuition typically runs £13,000 to £20,000 — roughly NPR 25 to 39 lakhs — with MBA and clinical programmes higher. On top of that UKVI requires maintenance of £1,171 per month outside London or £1,529 in London for up to nine months, plus a £558 visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge at £776 per year plus £388 for any remaining period of six months or less.

Often yes. Many UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter from Tribhuvan, Kathmandu, Pokhara or Purbanchal University, or NEB Grade 12 English marks, in place of IELTS. This is university policy rather than UKVI policy, so it varies by institution and sometimes by course. Nursing is the firm exception: NMC registration requires IELTS Academic 7.0 in reading, listening and speaking with 6.5 in writing, or OET Grade B, regardless.

Yes, at a substantial number of universities. Second division and 2.4 to 2.6 GPA profiles are routinely accepted by modern universities, particularly with relevant work experience or a strong statement of purpose. Russell Group institutions are far less likely to accept them. Send us your transcript and we will tell you which universities are realistic before you pay any application fee.

Twelve months full-time for a taught master's, including the dissertation, which is why UK master's degrees appeal to Nepali students — a two-year course elsewhere costs an extra year of tuition and living expenses. Visa leave covers the course plus about four months, so you are charged 1.5 years of Immigration Health Surcharge, not one.

Yes, through a conversion master's. Computing, data science, business analytics and law all offer programmes designed for graduates from unrelated backgrounds, usually adding a foundational term. Direct entry to a different specialist subject without a conversion route is unusual and depends on demonstrable relevant modules or work experience.

For most taught master's, no — a recognised bachelor's degree is enough. The exception is the MBA, where most reputable UK business schools expect two to three years of post-graduation professional experience, and some expect five. Programmes advertising an MBA with no experience requirement are usually MSc Management courses under a different name.

Expert Guidance

What are the most popular UK courses for Nepali students?

Currently, the highest demand lies in Healthcare (Nursing, Public Health) and Tech (Data Science, IT). These fields offer the strongest pathways from the Graduate Route Visa to long-term Skilled Worker Sponsorship due to severe UK labor shortages.

Can I change my field of study for a Master's degree?

Yes. A unique feature of the UK education system is the "Conversion Master's." This allows students who studied non-technical subjects (like BA or BBS) in Nepal to enroll in 1-year Master's programs in IT, Data Science, or Law, completely pivoting their careers.

Why Nepali Students Choose the UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is a popular higher-education destination for Nepali students. A UK bachelor’s degree typically takes three years and a taught master’s one year, which can reduce the total years of study compared with four-year systems elsewhere. Several UK universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL — rank in the global top tier, and more than 40 UK institutions appear in the QS World University Rankings top 200 (QS World University Rankings). Tuition varies by course and university and is listed on each university page; House of Admissions matches each student to programmes that fit their budget and academic profile.

The UK Student Visa, governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules, permits up to 20 hours of paid work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations (UK Home Office, gov.uk/student-visa), helping students offset living costs. The required 28-day maintenance balance is £10,539 for study outside London (≈ NPR 20.5 lakhs at NPR 195/£1) or £13,761 for London (≈ NPR 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files, with a reported 99% approval rate across applications it has supported (self-reported).

Living costs vary by city. Per HESA and UCAS estimates, students in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Loughborough typically budget around NPR 14–22 lakhs per year, compared with NPR 25 lakhs or more in London. Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter instead of IELTS — saving up to NPR 35,000 in examination and preparation costs and 2–3 months of preparation, where the chosen university accepts MOI.

After graduation, the Graduate Route grants unrestricted work with no job offer or sponsor required (UK Home Office, gov.uk/graduate-visa). Its length depends on when the Graduate Route application is filed, not on the course dates: 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years only for those filed on or before 31 December 2026 (PhD graduates keep 3 years either way). Because a student beginning a UK course now will file well after that cutoff, the 18-month figure is the realistic planning number. Graduate Route time does not count toward the standard 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock; the usual path is Graduate Route → switch to the Skilled Worker visa at the £38,700 salary threshold → Indefinite Leave to Remain after five qualifying years on the Skilled Worker route.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016 (self-reported), including 50+ Chevening placements (funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial awards), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Scholarship matching is included in HOA’s free service. Schools, colleges and organisations in Nepal can offer HOA’s UK guidance to their communities through a free partnership arrangement.
