How to Book

How Nepali Students Book UK Accommodation Step by Step

Accept Your University Offer

As soon as you accept your conditional or unconditional offer, your university portal will open the accommodation booking section. Book within the first 24–48 hours — halls fill up fast, especially in popular cities. HOA alerts you when your offer arrives.

Join Nepali Student Facebook Groups

Search “Nepali Students in Manchester” (or Birmingham, Leeds etc.) on Facebook. These groups are the most reliable source for finding Nepali housemates, subletting warnings, and area advice from existing students. Ask which areas are closest to campus and safest.

Use SpareRoom and Rightmove (Year 2+)

SpareRoom.co.uk is the UK’s largest flat-share platform. Search for rooms in your target city and contact multiple options. Never pay a deposit before viewing — video call viewings are now standard. Rightmove.co.uk lists full houses to rent.

Understand the Tenancy Agreement

All private rentals require a signed tenancy agreement (usually Assured Shorthold Tenancy / AST). Key things to check: deposit amount (max 5 weeks’ rent), notice period (usually 1 month), what bills are included, and inventory check-in process. HOA pre-departure briefing covers tenancy basics.

Get UK Guarantor or Pay Advance Rent

Most private landlords require a UK guarantor (someone earning 36× the monthly rent in the UK). Nepali students typically don’t have UK guarantors. Options: (1) Pay 6 months’ rent in advance (common for international students), (2) Use a guarantor service (Homeppl, Housing Hand — cost £150–£300/year), or (3) Choose university halls which rarely require guarantors.

Scam warning: Never pay a deposit to anyone via bank transfer without viewing the property (in person or video call) and signing a legitimate tenancy agreement. Common scam: advertise fake properties on Facebook and ask for a “holding deposit” via PayPal or bank transfer. If it seems too cheap, it is a scam. Use SpareRoom or go through your university accommodation office only.

FAQ

UK Student Accommodation FAQ

Monthly accommodation costs 2026: London £600–£1,200 (NPR 1.17–2.34L). Manchester £400–£850 (NPR 0.78–1.66L). Birmingham £380–£820 (NPR 0.74–1.60L). Sheffield/Cardiff £350–£780 (NPR 0.68–1.52L). Shared housing is 20–30% cheaper than university halls but bills are separate (add £60–£100/month).

University halls for year 1: safer, bills included, easy to meet people, near campus. Shared private housing from year 2: £100–£200/month cheaper per person, more independence, better for longer-term stays. Most HOA alumni recommend starting in halls to find Nepali housemates, then sharing a private house together from year 2. This approach saves £1,200–£2,400 per year from year 2 onwards.

Three options: (1) Pay 6 months’ rent in advance — most landlords accept this instead of a guarantor. (2) Guarantor service — companies like Housing Hand (housinghand.co.uk) provide UK guarantor service for approximately £150–£300/year. (3) University-managed accommodation — rarely requires a UK guarantor. Most HOA students pay 6 months’ advance rent for year-2 private housing. Plan for this in your bank balance.

UK student accommodation is generally safe. University halls have 24-hour security. For private accommodation, UK universities provide area safety maps and most Nepali students live in well-established student areas. HOA pre-departure briefing includes specific area advice for your university city. General rule: the area immediately around your university and established student streets are the safest and most affordable.

Why Nepali Students Choose the UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is a popular higher-education destination for Nepali students. A UK bachelor’s degree typically takes three years and a taught master’s one year, which can reduce the total years of study compared with four-year systems elsewhere. Several UK universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL — rank in the global top tier, and more than 40 UK institutions appear in the QS World University Rankings top 200 (QS World University Rankings). Tuition varies by course and university and is listed on each university page; House of Admissions matches each student to programmes that fit their budget and academic profile.

The UK Student Visa, governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules, permits up to 20 hours of paid work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations (UK Home Office, gov.uk/student-visa), helping students offset living costs. The required 28-day maintenance balance is £10,539 for study outside London (≈ NPR 20.5 lakhs at NPR 195/£1) or £13,761 for London (≈ NPR 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files, with a reported 99% approval rate across applications it has supported (self-reported).

Living costs vary by city. Per HESA and UCAS estimates, students in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Loughborough typically budget around NPR 14–22 lakhs per year, compared with NPR 25 lakhs or more in London. Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter instead of IELTS — saving up to NPR 35,000 in examination and preparation costs and 2–3 months of preparation, where the chosen university accepts MOI.

After graduation, the Graduate Route grants unrestricted work with no job offer or sponsor required (UK Home Office, gov.uk/graduate-visa). Its length depends on when the Graduate Route application is filed, not on the course dates: 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years only for those filed on or before 31 December 2026 (PhD graduates keep 3 years either way). Because a student beginning a UK course now will file well after that cutoff, the 18-month figure is the realistic planning number. Graduate Route time does not count toward the standard 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock; the usual path is Graduate Route → switch to the Skilled Worker visa at the £38,700 salary threshold → Indefinite Leave to Remain after five qualifying years on the Skilled Worker route.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016 (self-reported), including 50+ Chevening placements (funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial awards), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Scholarship matching is included in HOA’s free service. Schools, colleges and organisations in Nepal can offer HOA’s UK guidance to their communities through a free partnership arrangement.
