NPR figures use HOA's planning rate of NPR 195 per £1 (October 2026), based on the Nepal Rastra Bank reference rate. Check the day's rate before you transfer; for visa evidence UKVI uses the OANDA rate on your application date.
Accommodation
Accommodation is usually the biggest expense:
- University halls: £550–900/month (typically includes bills)
- Shared private house: £400–700/month per room (more affordable from year 2 onwards)
- Studio/private flat: £700–1,200/month (higher for London)
Living with other Nepali students in shared private accommodation is the most common and cost-effective option after your first year.
Food and Groceries
UK supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Aldi) are affordable for those who cook at home:
- Weekly groceries: £30–50/week for one person
- South Asian and Nepali groceries are available in most UK cities with significant Asian communities (including dal, rice, spices, fresh vegetables)
- Eating out adds up quickly — budget £30–60/month for occasional meals out
Working Part-Time
Student visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week during term time (full-time during official university holidays). At the UK's National Living Wage (£12.71/hour, UK Low Pay Commission, April 2026), this is about £1,000 a month before tax at the full 20 hours — enough to cover a significant portion of living costs.
