UK Without IELTS — 2026 Guide

Study in UK Without IELTS Affordable Universities for Nepali Students

MOI acceptance last checked: 23 August 2026. Whether a Medium of Instruction letter is accepted in place of IELTS is decided by each university and each programme individually, not by UKVI, and it changes between cycles. HOA confirms MOI eligibility for your specific course free before you prepare documents.

If you scored 60% or above in Grade 12 English, or completed a Bachelor's degree taught in English, you may not need IELTS for a UK university. House of Admissions has placed 200+ Nepali students in UK universities using Grade 12 marks or an MOI letter — with full UK Student Visa approval.

Section 01 Why UK — and Why You May Not Need IELTS

The United Kingdom remains Nepal's most popular study abroad destination. A UK Bachelor's degree takes just 3 years (versus 4 in the US, Canada or Australia), saving an entire year of tuition and living expenses. The UK Student Visa permits 20 hours of part-time work per week during term, and after graduation the Graduate Route Visa gives 2 unrestricted years of UK work rights — a pathway toward the Skilled Worker Visa and eventual UK settlement.

What many Nepali students do not realise is that a significant number of UK universities — excellent teaching-focused institutions outside London — accept alternatives to IELTS for admission. If you scored well in Grade 12 English, or completed a Bachelor's degree taught in English, you may already meet the language requirement without sitting any English test.

Save NPR 32,000+

IELTS costs approximately NPR 32,000–34,000 per attempt. Skipping it saves money and 2–3 months of preparation time you can spend on your application instead.

Apply Immediately

No test booking, no waiting for results. Once you have your Grade 12 transcript or MOI letter, your application can be submitted within days of your consultation.

Fully Visa-Approved

UKVI fully accepts Grade 12 English marks and MOI letters from licenced sponsor universities. Our 99% visa success rate applies equally to students on this route.

Accredited Universities

All universities we recommend are Office for Students (OfS) registered and UKVI-licenced. Affordability reflects city location, not teaching quality — several hold TEF Gold ratings.

Fully legitimate: UKVI explicitly permits licenced sponsor universities to waive IELTS when students meet their own English proficiency criteria. House of Admissions has used this route successfully since 2020 with a 99% visa approval record.

Section 02 Two Routes to UK Admission Without IELTS

UK universities accepting IELTS alternatives recognise one of two documents from Nepali students. Which applies to you depends on your study level.

Route 1: Grade 12 English Marks

For Bachelor's

A mark of 60% or above in NEB, HSEB, CBSE or British curriculum Grade 12 English may satisfy the UK university's English language requirement entirely — no test required.

  • 60%+ in Grade 12 English (some universities accept 55%+)
  • English was a core taught subject, not just the medium
  • NEB, HSEB, CBSE or British curriculum all accepted
  • Original +2 transcript or mark sheet required

Documents Required

  • Grade 12 / +2 transcript (showing English grade)
  • Grade 12 completion or character certificate
  • College verification letter (we help draft)

Route 2: MOI Letter

For Master's

If your Bachelor's was taught entirely in English at a Nepali university, a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your institution is the standard route for TU, KU and PU graduates applying to UK Master's programmes.

  • Bachelor's degree taught in English medium
  • MOI letter on official letterhead, signed by Registrar or Dean
  • Letter must state: "Medium of instruction was English"
  • College stamp and signatory title required

Documents Required

  • MOI letter (official letterhead, signed, stamped)
  • All Bachelor's transcripts (Year 1 to final)
  • Bachelor's degree or provisional certificate

If your Grade 12 English is below 60%, options remain — universities with 55%+ requirements, 4–8 week pre-sessional English programmes, and IELTS coaching. Contact us with your exact score and we will find the right route for you.

Section 03 How to Get Your MOI Letter — Step by Step

Section 04 12 UK Universities Offering IELTS Waivers for Nepali Students

These are the universities House of Admissions currently works with on the IELTS-waiver route for Nepali applicants. Fees are indicative annual international tuition starting figures and vary by course; waiver terms are set by each university and confirmed case by case. Grade requirements below refer to Grade 12 English.

The twelve universities below are the ones House of Admissions currently works with on the IELTS-waiver route for Nepali applicants. Waiver terms differ meaningfully between them — some accept Grade 12 English at B, others require B+, and several accept an MOI letter for postgraduate entry only — so read the requirement line on each card rather than assuming they are interchangeable. Contact us or WhatsApp us for the full list matched to your profile and target city.

Section 07 Frequently Asked Questions

Which UK universities accept MOI letters from Nepal?

Over 25 UK universities in HOA's partner network accept a Medium of Instruction letter from Tribhuvan, Kathmandu, Pokhara and Purbanchal University graduates instead of IELTS. Acceptance is set by each university individually, not by UKVI, so it must be confirmed course by course. Russell Group universities generally still require IELTS. House of Admissions checks MOI eligibility against your specific shortlist free of charge before you apply.

Does studying without IELTS affect my UK Student Visa or Graduate Route?

No. UKVI does not require a Secure English Language Test for degree-level study when the sponsoring university has assessed your English itself and confirmed it on your CAS. Your visa conditions, 20-hours-per-week term-time work rights and Graduate Route eligibility are identical to a student who submitted IELTS. The Graduate Route gives 18 months of unrestricted work for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years for those filed on or before 31 December 2026 (3 years for PhD graduates).

Can I really study in UK without IELTS from Nepal?

Yes — completely legitimately. A significant number of UK universities are UKVI-licenced sponsors that accept alternative English language evidence from Nepali students. For Bachelor's applicants, 60%+ in Grade 12 English is the most common route. For Master's applicants, an MOI letter from your Bachelor's college is widely accepted.

This is explicitly permitted by UKVI rules when the sponsor university is satisfied the student meets their English proficiency standard. House of Admissions has placed 200+ Nepali students through this route — all with full UK Student Visa approval.

Are these universities good quality despite being affordable?

Yes. Every university we recommend is: (1) registered with the Office for Students (OfS), (2) a UKVI Highly Trusted Sponsor, (3) inspected and regulated to UK government standards, and (4) recognised by UK and international employers. Several hold TEF Gold teaching excellence ratings.

Fee differences largely reflect geography — universities outside London have lower operational costs and pass that on in international fees. The saving is larger than tuition alone suggests, because the UKVI maintenance requirement outside London is £10,539 against £13,761 for London, roughly NPR 6 lakhs less to evidence. Teaching quality, facilities and graduate outcomes are often comparable to or better than more expensive institutions. Our students consistently report high satisfaction.

What if my Grade 12 English percentage is below 60%?

You still have options. If your English score is 55–59%, several partner universities accept 55%+ directly. If it is below 55%, we recommend one of two paths:

Pre-sessional English programme: A 4–8 week intensive English course run by the university before your main programme. Completing it satisfies the language requirement entirely — no external IELTS needed.

Targeted IELTS preparation: We guide you towards affordable IELTS coaching. Most students targeting IELTS 5.5–6.0 for these universities achieve it within 2–3 months of focused preparation. Contact us with your exact Grade 12 English score for a precise recommendation.

Can I get a UK Student Visa without IELTS?

Yes. The UK Student Visa does not require a separate IELTS if the sponsoring university has assessed your English using its own criteria (Grade 12 English or MOI) and is satisfied you meet the standard. This is covered explicitly in UKVI's sponsor guidance.

The key is that the university must be a UKVI-licenced Highly Trusted Sponsor — all universities we work with are. The visa application process is identical for IELTS and non-IELTS students; only the English proficiency document in your file differs.

Can I work in the UK while studying without IELTS?

Yes — work rights are identical regardless of how you proved your English. The UK Student Visa permits 20 hours of part-time work per week during term and unlimited work during official university holidays. This applies to all licenced sponsor university students.

At £10–£12/hour, 20 hours per week generates £800–£1,000/month — covering 60–80% of living costs outside London. After graduation, the Graduate Route Visa gives unrestricted work anywhere in the UK with no sponsor required — 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, 2 years if filed on or before 31 December 2026.

Which Nepali universities issue MOI letters — is TU included?

Yes — Tribhuvan University (TU) colleges issue MOI letters, as do Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University (PU), Purbanchal University, and all English-medium private colleges in Nepal. The letter is issued by your college's Dean's Office or Registrar — not by the central university — and must confirm all teaching was conducted in English.

House of Admissions provides the exact format that UK universities accept. You hand our template to your college administration. Processing time is typically 3–7 working days at most institutions, with a nominal fee of NPR 500–1,000. We review every MOI letter before it is sent to the university — 100% success rate with our guidance.

An important limit on everything above. Whether a Medium of Instruction letter is accepted in place of IELTS is decided by each university and each programme individually, not by UKVI and not by any central body. There is no official list of MOI-accepting universities, and acceptance changes between cycles. Russell Group universities generally still require IELTS, and NMC nursing registration always requires IELTS Academic 7.0 in reading, listening and speaking with 6.5 in writing, or OET Grade B, regardless of any MOI letter. Confirm in writing with your specific university before relying on an MOI route. Figures cited for House of Admissions are self-reported from internal tracking data since 2016.

Why Nepali Students Choose the UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is a popular higher-education destination for Nepali students. A UK bachelor’s degree typically takes three years and a taught master’s one year, which can reduce the total years of study compared with four-year systems elsewhere. Several UK universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL — rank in the global top tier, and more than 40 UK institutions appear in the QS World University Rankings top 200 (QS World University Rankings). Tuition varies by course and university and is listed on each university page; House of Admissions matches each student to programmes that fit their budget and academic profile.

The UK Student Visa, governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules, permits up to 20 hours of paid work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations (UK Home Office, gov.uk/student-visa), helping students offset living costs. The required 28-day maintenance balance is £10,539 for study outside London (≈ NPR 20.5 lakhs at NPR 195/£1) or £13,761 for London (≈ NPR 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files, with a reported 99% approval rate across applications it has supported (self-reported).

Living costs vary by city. Per HESA and UCAS estimates, students in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Loughborough typically budget around NPR 14–22 lakhs per year, compared with NPR 25 lakhs or more in London. Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter instead of IELTS — saving up to NPR 35,000 in examination and preparation costs and 2–3 months of preparation, where the chosen university accepts MOI.

After graduation, the Graduate Route grants unrestricted work with no job offer or sponsor required (UK Home Office, gov.uk/graduate-visa). Its length depends on when the Graduate Route application is filed, not on the course dates: 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years only for those filed on or before 31 December 2026 (PhD graduates keep 3 years either way). Because a student beginning a UK course now will file well after that cutoff, the 18-month figure is the realistic planning number. Graduate Route time does not count toward the standard 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock; the usual path is Graduate Route → switch to the Skilled Worker visa at the £38,700 salary threshold → Indefinite Leave to Remain after five qualifying years on the Skilled Worker route.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016 (self-reported), including 50+ Chevening placements (funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial awards), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Scholarship matching is included in HOA’s free service. Schools, colleges and organisations in Nepal can offer HOA’s UK guidance to their communities through a free partnership arrangement.
