Modern UK Universities for Nepali Students: Post-1992 Universities Explained
“Modern university” usually means one that became a university in 1992 or later, often a former polytechnic. Here is what that means for Nepali students, with the fees each university publishes.
What Is a Modern University in the UK?
Modern UK universities are those that gained university status in 1992 or later, many of them former polytechnics. They focus on practical, career-linked courses and usually have wider entry routes than Russell Group universities. On the fee pages HOA checked, a typical master’s at the 46 listed here cost about £19,000 a year.
A university that received university status in or after 1992, when former polytechnics became universities, plus colleges that gained the title later. “Modern” describes history, not quality; each university and course still has to be judged on its own.

Modern Universities vs Russell Group: What Changes?
- Courses: more vocational and industry-linked degrees, placements and professional accreditation.
- Entry: often wider routes, including lower grade requirements, foundation years and, for some courses, MOI letters instead of IELTS.
- Fees: usually lower than Russell Group fees; on the pages HOA checked, a typical master’s was about £19,000 a year.
- Visa: the same Student visa, Graduate visa and money rules apply to every licensed university.
