Why Do Nepali Students Choose the UK?
Nepali students choose the UK for a one-year master’s, an 18-month Graduate visa for applications from 1 January 2027, 20 hours of term-time work and NHS care through the health surcharge. A typical one-year master’s outside London costs about NPR 63–82 lakhs in total, including living costs and the visa.
Mostly for time and work rights: most taught master’s courses take one year, and the Graduate visa lets you work afterwards without a sponsor. The UK is not the cheapest option for everyone, so compare the total cost, not just the fee.

What Are the 10 Reasons Nepali Students Choose the UK?
- A one-year master’s. Most taught master’s courses take 12 months, so you pay one year of fees and living costs.
- The Graduate visa. 18 months of work without a sponsor for applications from 1 January 2027; 3 years after a PhD. See the Graduate visa.
- Work while you study. Up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time in holidays. At £12.71 an hour, 20 hours is about £254 a week before tax. See part-time work.
- NHS healthcare. The health surcharge (£776 a year) gives you NHS care on the same basis as residents. See healthcare.
- Recognised degrees. UK degrees are recognised by employers and universities in Nepal and abroad, including for later study.
- Clear money rules. The visa money is a published formula: tuition still owed plus up to nine months of living costs, held for 28 days.
- A route to stay. A Skilled Worker job paying £41,700 or the going rate (from £33,400 for many new entrants) can follow the Graduate visa.

- A large Nepali community. The Home Office counted 20,572 sponsored study visas for Nepalese nationals in the year to September 2025.

Russell Group master’s fees are higher, typically £27,000 to £45,000. In London, the visa living-cost figure is £1,570 a month. Part-time work can cover some living costs, but you cannot count future earnings as visa money. See the full cost breakdown.
