Freshers' Week is the induction period at the start of the UK academic year, with orientation, enrolment, society fairs and social events before teaching starts. Prioritise enrolment and course inductions, join one or two societies, and set your own pace with social events. House of Admissions (HOA) gives free guidance from Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Quick answer

It is the induction week before teaching starts. Finish enrolment and course inductions first, then visit the societies fair. You do not have to attend every social event, especially ones centred on alcohol.

Freshers' Week: A Guide for International Students in the UK

Freshers' Week sets the tone for your entire UK university experience. Here's how to navigate it as a new international student.

What Is Freshers' Week?

Freshers' Week is the induction period at the start of the UK academic year — typically the week before or the first week of term — packed with orientation sessions, society sign-ups, social events, and campus tours designed to help new students settle in before formal teaching begins.

Key Things to Do During Freshers' Week

  • Attend your department's academic induction — timetables, course structure, and key staff are introduced here
  • Visit the Freshers' Fair to browse and join student societies, including your university's Nepali or South Asian Society
  • Register with a local GP as early as possible (see HOA's NHS guide)
  • Open a UK bank account if you haven't already
  • Attend at least a few social events, even if socially tiring — this is when most lasting friendships begin

Balancing Social Pressure with Your Own Pace

Freshers' Week often involves heavy socialising, including events centred around alcohol, which may feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable. It's completely normal to selectively attend events that suit you — joining a sports club, academic society, or cultural group is just as valid a way to build friendships as nightlife-focused events.

Joining Societies as an International Student

Most UK universities have dozens of student-run societies — from academic and career-focused groups to sports, cultural, and hobby clubs. Joining your university's Nepali Society is a fast way to build immediate community, while joining one non-Nepali society (a sport, hobby, or academic interest group) helps build a wider UK social network from day one.
