Why You Need a UK Bank Account Quickly

You need a UK bank account to receive your part-time wages (employers cannot pay into overseas accounts), to set up direct debits for accommodation and utilities, and to manage day-to-day spending without costly international transaction fees on your Nepali card.

Option 1: Digital Banks (Recommended for Speed)

Monzo and Starling Bank are UK digital banks that can be opened entirely on your phone within 10–15 minutes of arrival in the UK. You need:

• A UK address (your student accommodation address)
• Your passport or BRP card
• A selfie for identity verification

These accounts are full UK bank accounts with sort codes and account numbers — they work exactly like traditional bank accounts for receiving wages and making payments. No minimum balance required.

Option 2: Traditional UK Banks

Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, and NatWest all offer student accounts, but the application process is slower (typically requires an in-branch appointment and may take 2–4 weeks). Some require a letter from your university.

Traditional bank student accounts sometimes come with a 0% overdraft — useful once established — but the speed advantage of digital banks means most Nepali students open a Monzo or Starling account first.
