Why Reading Is a Winnable Section
Unlike Speaking or Writing, IELTS Reading has fixed, correct answers — meaning consistent strategy can reliably push your score up, independent of natural fluency. The section tests your ability to locate and interpret information efficiently under time pressure, not deep literary comprehension.
The Skim-First Approach
- Spend 1–2 minutes skimming the passage's structure — headings, first and last sentences of paragraphs
- Read the questions before reading the passage in detail, so you know exactly what to look for
- Locate the relevant section using keywords, then read that section closely for the actual answer
- Move on — don't get stuck rereading a passage repeatedly for one difficult question
Mastering True / False / Not Given
This question type causes the most lost marks among Nepali test-takers. The key distinction: False means the passage states the opposite of the question; Not Given means the passage simply doesn't mention it at all — it is not a claim about accuracy. Do not use outside knowledge to answer; base your answer strictly on what the passage states or omits.
Time Management Across All Three Passages
You have 60 minutes for 40 questions across 3 passages, with no extra transfer time (unlike the paper-based test in some formats). Aim for roughly 20 minutes per passage. If you're stuck on a question after 90 seconds, mark your best guess and move on — every question carries equal weight, so a difficult question is worth no more than an easy one.
Building Reading Speed Over Time
Read English-language news articles or short non-fiction daily, focusing on identifying the main idea of each paragraph quickly rather than reading word-for-word. This builds the skimming speed IELTS Reading rewards, distinct from slow, careful reading used for pleasure or deep study.
