Why Some Students Want to Avoid IELTS

The good news is that several legitimate pathways exist to study in the UK without an IELTS score.

Medium of Instruction (MOI) Letter

If your previous qualification (A-levels, +2, or bachelor's degree) was taught entirely in English, your institution can issue an MOI (Medium of Instruction) letter confirming this. Many UK universities accept MOI letters as an alternative to IELTS.

For Nepali students, this typically applies to those who completed:

• A bachelor's degree from a reputable Nepali university where instruction was in English
• A-levels from a recognised English-medium school

However, the key word is "many" — not all universities accept MOI letters, and even those that do may only accept them for certain entry levels. Always check with the specific university.

Alternative English Tests Accepted in the UK

• PTE Academic — widely accepted, computer-based, results in 48 hours
• TOEFL iBT — accepted at most UK universities, though less common than IELTS
• Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency — accepted by most universities
• Duolingo English Test — increasingly accepted, more affordable, fully online; check whether UKVI accepts it for your visa type
