A UKVI interview checks whether you meet the Genuine Student requirement — not every applicant is called, but because selection isn't predictable, every applicant should prepare as if they might be. What Is a UKVI Interview?
A UKVI interview — usually called a credibility interview — is a conversation UK Visas and Immigration uses to check whether a Student visa applicant meets the Genuine Student requirement, set out in the Immigration Rules, Appendix Student, ST 5.1. The rule requires the Home Office to be satisfied, on the balance of probabilities, that you genuinely intend to study — not that you are using the Student route for another purpose.
Interviews are not conducted for every applicant. UKVI selects cases where a caseworker or Entry Clearance Officer wants more information before deciding — after reviewing your application, your CAS, and your supporting documents. Because the selection criteria aren't published, the honest, useful position is: treat an interview as possible on any application, and prepare accordingly.
Not the same as a university pre-CAS interview. Many UK universities run their own short interview before issuing a CAS, as part of the university's own duties as a licensed sponsor. That's a different, earlier conversation with the university — not UKVI. Preparation overlaps, but they're run by different organisations at different stages.
Why Are More Nepali Students Getting a UKVI Interview?
UKVI has genuinely increased both the number of credibility interviews it conducts and the level of scrutiny applied to them. Times Higher Education reported in February 2026 that refusal rates were rising for some intakes as more applicants were being called in for credibility checks, with universities describing uncertainty over exactly how UKVI applies the Genuine Student assessment. Individual UK universities, including Northumbria and Westminster, separately confirm the same direction: more interviews, more detailed questioning, and closer checking of consistency between an applicant's answers and their paperwork.
What HOA won't do: state a specific interview or pass rate for Nepali applicants as fact. UKVI does not publish this data broken down by nationality, and any precise percentage you see quoted online — including figures that sound official — cannot be independently verified. The direction of the trend (more scrutiny) is well documented; the exact numbers circulating for any single nationality are not.
What this means practically: the safest assumption for any Nepali applicant in 2026 is that an interview is genuinely possible, and that a well-prepared, consistent, specific application matters more than it did a few years ago.
How Do You Prepare for a UKVI Credibility Interview?
Six steps, in order, from reviewing your paperwork to walking into the interview itself.
Review Your CAS and Application
Re-read your CAS and everything you submitted. Your interview answers need to match what's already on file — inconsistencies are the single most common reason officers doubt an applicant.
Know Your Course and University Cold
Be able to explain your course content, why you chose it, and why this specific university, without reading from notes. Vague or generic answers are a known red flag.
Understand Your Finances in Detail
Know exactly who is funding your studies, the amounts, and where the money came from — savings, a loan, a sponsor. You should be able to explain this without hesitation.
Prepare a Genuine Post-Study Plan
Have a specific, realistic answer for what you plan to do after your course. This connects directly to the Genuine Student requirement itself.
Do a Mock Interview
Practise out loud with someone else asking the questions. Avoid memorising word-for-word answers — officers are trained to notice rehearsed responses more than imperfect English.
Attend the Interview Calmly
Arrive or log in early. Answer honestly and directly, and ask the officer to repeat a question if you're unsure rather than guessing.

What Is a Pre-CAS Interview and How Does It Differ from UKVI?
A Pre-CAS Interview, commonly abbreviated PCI, is run by the university, not by the Home Office. Most UK universities now interview Nepali applicants before issuing a CAS, and it is a separate hurdle from the UKVI credibility interview that may follow. Failing the PCI means no CAS, which means no visa application at all.

Why UK universities introduced the PCI
Under the UKVI RAG framework, live since 1 June 2026, a sponsoring university’s band is set by its single worst metric, and visa refusal rate is one of them. Universities therefore screen applicants themselves before issuing a CAS, because a refused student damages their compliance position. A PCI is the university protecting its own sponsor licence. Note that UKVI has not published a public band register — one is expected around summer 2027 — so no consultancy can tell you a named university’s current band.

The questions overlap heavily with the UKVI interview, which is why preparing once serves both. What differs is emphasis: a PCI weighs academic fit more heavily, while UKVI weighs genuine-student credibility and finances.
How Should You Rehearse for a UK Visa Interview?
Reading questions silently does not prepare you. UK credibility interview practice works when you answer aloud, under time, and then check the answer against what an interviewer is actually assessing. Four rounds of that beats twenty read-throughs.
- Answer aloud, timed. Give yourself 60–90 seconds per question and speak the full answer. Most weak answers are not wrong — they simply run out of shape halfway through, which only shows up when you say them out loud.
- Check against the criteria, not your feelings. Did you answer the question asked? Give a specific example? Include a concrete number, name or date? Finish cleanly inside the time? Say nothing that contradicts your SOP or visa file?
- Re-answer the same question. Improvement comes from repeating one question until each criterion is a yes, not from moving through fifty questions once.
- Rehearse your finances precisely. Know the exact maintenance figure you hold, whose account it is in, and how your sponsor earns it. Vague funding answers are a documented refusal ground.

If you are asking whether you can reschedule a UKVI interview appointment: contact UKVI or your visa application centre as soon as possible if you have a genuine reason you cannot attend, since missing an interview without a reasonable explanation risks refusal of your application. This is different from visa cancellation (curtailment) — a Home Office action ending an already-granted visa, usually because of a change in study circumstances — which is a separate topic from a pre-decision interview.
