Nursing in the UK for Nepali Students — NMC Registration and the IELTS 7.0 Wall
Nursing is one of the strongest routes to a UK career for Nepali students, and the one with the hardest single gate. That gate is English, not academics.
By Rahul Chhetri, Director, House of Admissions · Updated 20 Oct 2026
To practise as a nurse in the UK you need Nursing and Midwifery Council registration, and the NMC requires IELTS Academic 7.0 in reading, listening and speaking with 6.5 in writing, or OET Grade B. A Medium of Instruction letter cannot waive this — not for any university, not under any circumstance. Plan your English preparation around that number first.
This page is the decision guide: who it suits, what it pays, and the honest risk. For the university list, entry requirements by Nepali qualification and the full cost breakdown, see the course page. For course types and entry, see the nursing and healthcare subject guide; for registration after you qualify, see NMC registration for Nepali nurses.
- Who Nursing & NMC suits
- BSc Nursing (recognised); PCL Nursing with experience for some routes; healthcare management open to non-clinical degrees
- Typical entry salary in the UK
- NHS Band 5 at registration, rising with experience and specialism
- Against the £41,700 threshold
- Health and care roles use their own, lower thresholds
- One-year cost of the visa itself
- £558 visa fee + £1,164 IHS = £1,722
- Our verdict on Nursing & NMC
- Very strong — if and only if you can reach IELTS 7.0
The IELTS 7.0 Requirement Is Not Negotiable
Over 25 UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter for admission. The NMC accepts it for nothing. Registration requires IELTS Academic 7.0 in reading, listening and speaking with 6.5 in writing, or OET Grade B. Nepali applicants routinely secure a university place on MOI and then discover they cannot register. Sit the test early.
What Are the Realistic Routes from Nepal?
- NMC overseas registration — for qualified nurses with a recognised BSc Nursing and experience. The direct route to NHS employment, gated on the English requirement and the CBT/OSCE assessments.
- Pre-registration nursing degree in the UK — a full undergraduate route, expensive but leads directly to registration.
- MSc healthcare or public health — does not lead to registration. Suitable for management, policy or research, not clinical practice. MPH explained.
What Does NHS Nursing Pay?
NHS pay is banded rather than negotiated, and newly registered nurses typically start at Band 5. Health and care roles have their own salary thresholds under the Skilled Worker route rather than the general £41,700 figure, which is one reason nursing converts to sponsored employment more readily than most subjects.
Nursing is one of the most reliable routes from Nepal to long-term UK employment — NHS trusts sponsor at scale and the demand is structural. The barrier is almost never academic. It is IELTS 7.0.

IELTS Academic 7.0 in reading, listening and speaking, with 6.5 in writing, or OET Grade B. This is an NMC requirement and applies regardless of which university admitted you.
No — never. Over 25 UK universities accept MOI for admission, but the NMC does not accept it for registration under any circumstance. This catches out Nepali applicants every year.
No. Management and public health master’s do not lead to NMC registration. They suit policy, administration and research roles. For clinical practice you need NMC registration via the overseas route or a pre-registration degree.
Generally not on its own for direct NMC registration. A recognised BSc Nursing is the stronger basis. PCL holders with substantial experience sometimes have top-up or pre-registration options — check per institution rather than assuming.
NHS pay is banded, and newly registered nurses typically start at Band 5. Health and care roles have their own Skilled Worker salary thresholds rather than the general £41,700 figure.
Yes, at scale — the demand is structural rather than cyclical, which makes nursing one of the more reliable routes from Nepal to long-term UK employment.
It varies considerably and depends on the English test, the computer-based test and the OSCE. Start the English requirement first: it is the step that most often adds months, and everything else waits on it.
You may be admitted to a nursing degree with a lower score, but you will need IELTS 7.0 (6.5 in writing) or OET B to register with the NMC afterwards.
