MPH in the UK for Nepali Students — Population Health, Not Clinical Practice
The most misunderstood health subject among Nepali applicants, and the one where getting the distinction wrong costs a year.
By Rahul Chhetri, Director, House of Admissions · Updated 20 Oct 2026
An MPH is a population health degree, not a clinical one. It does not lead to NMC registration, does not license you to practise, and is not a route to clinical NHS work. What it does lead to is epidemiology, health policy, programme management and global health — and it carries unusual weight back in Nepal with NGOs and government health programmes.
This page is the decision guide: who it suits, what it pays, and the honest risk. For the university list, entry requirements by Nepali qualification and the full cost breakdown, see the course page.
- Who MPH Public Health suits
- MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, BPH directly; pharmacy, physiotherapy, microbiology, statistics and development studies widely accepted
- Typical entry salary in the UK
- Public sector banded; NGO and international roles vary widely
- Against the £41,700 threshold
- Public sector banding applies rather than the general threshold
- One-year cost of the visa itself
- £558 visa fee + £1,164 IHS = £1,722
- Our verdict on MPH Public Health
- Strong — especially if you intend to return to Nepal
What an MPH Is Not
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in this subject. An MPH does not register you with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, does not license you to practise medicine, and is not a route to clinical NHS employment. If clinical practice is your goal, see nursing and NMC registration instead.
Who Gets Accepted from Nepal?
MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing and BPH graduates are accepted directly and competitively. Pharmacy, physiotherapy, microbiology and nutrition backgrounds are widely accepted. Social science, statistics and development studies graduates are accepted at many universities, particularly with health-sector field experience — and NGO experience in Nepal counts for more here than a slightly better transcript would.
Is It Worth More in Nepal Than the UK?
Often, yes — and that is a genuine strength, not a consolation. International NGOs, bilateral development programmes and government health projects in Nepal recruit specifically for a UK MPH. Returning is a strong outcome here in a way it is not for most subjects. UK public health roles are largely public sector, where sponsorship exists but is competitive.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. An MPH is a population-health qualification and does not lead to Nursing and Midwifery Council registration or any licence to practise clinically. If clinical nursing is your goal you need a pre-registration programme or the NMC overseas route.
Yes, at many universities. Social science, statistics, development studies and environmental science graduates are regularly admitted, particularly with NGO or health-programme experience in Nepal. Some competitive programmes prefer a health-related first degree.
Yes, particularly so. International NGOs, bilateral development programmes and government health projects recruit specifically for this qualification, which makes returning a strong outcome rather than a fallback.
Normally 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 — higher than business or hospitality, lower than the clinical nursing requirement of 7.0. Many universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter, unlike NMC registration which never waives the English test.
Public health officer, epidemiologist, health programme manager and policy analyst roles with NHS public health teams, local authorities, NGOs and research institutions. Much of it is public sector, where sponsorship is available but competitive.
Significantly. Work with an NGO, a health programme or a district health office strengthens an MPH application in a way it would not for a technical subject, and can offset a weaker transcript.
They overlap heavily. Global health programmes tend to emphasise international and low-resource-setting work; MPH tends to be broader and more methods-focused. For a Nepali applicant intending to work in development, either is defensible — compare the actual modules.
It can lead to research, NGO, health policy or data roles, but you need a sponsored job that meets the Skilled Worker rules, and many public health roles are competitive.
