LLM in the UK for Nepali Students — What It Qualifies You For, and What It Does Not
An LLM is a strong academic credential and a weak work visa. That distinction decides whether this subject is right for you.
By Rahul Chhetri, Director, House of Admissions · Updated 20 Oct 2026
An LLM from a BA LLB or LLB background is academically valuable and well regarded in Nepal. But it does not make you a solicitor in England and Wales — that needs the SQE and a qualifying work placement — and legal graduate salaries outside the large City firms often sit below the £41,700 Skilled Worker threshold.
This page is the decision guide: who it suits, what it pays, and the honest risk. For the university list, entry requirements by Nepali qualification and the full cost breakdown, see the course page.
- Who LLM and Law suits
- BA LLB (5-year), LLB (3-year); criminology routes accept any social science background
- Typical entry salary in the UK
- Highly variable — City firms high, most other legal roles below threshold
- Against the £41,700 threshold
- Often below it outside City firms - the weak point of this subject
- One-year cost of the visa itself
- £558 visa fee + £1,164 IHS = £1,722
- Our verdict on LLM and Law
- Good for returning to Nepal or academia; weak if the goal is a UK work visa
Does an LLM Let You Practise Law in the UK?
No. Qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales requires the Solicitors Qualifying Examination and a period of qualifying work experience. An LLM is neither. Some universities offer LLM programmes with SQE preparation built in, which is a different and more useful proposition — check whether yours does.
Who Is an LLM Actually Worth It For?
Three groups, in our experience. Those returning to Nepal, where a UK LLM carries real weight with law firms, NGOs and the development sector. Those targeting international or commercial specialisms that transfer across jurisdictions. And those who intend to teach or research.
Outside the large City firms, UK legal graduate salaries frequently sit below the £41,700 threshold, and the training-contract route is highly competitive and rarely open to someone without UK qualification. If your primary goal is to stay and work in the UK, an LLM is one of the weaker subjects for that purpose. We would rather say so now.
What About Criminology Instead?
MSc Criminology accepts any social science background, not just law, and leads toward policy, research, NGO and public-sector work rather than legal practice. If your interest is justice systems rather than practising law, it is often the better fit — and it is open to BA Sociology and BA Psychology graduates from Nepal.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales requires the Solicitors Qualifying Examination and qualifying work experience. An LLM is an academic degree, not a professional qualification. Some LLMs include SQE preparation — check whether yours does.
Yes, considerably. Nepali law firms, NGOs and the development sector recognise a UK LLM, and for students intending to return it is one of the better-value qualifications available.
You can use the Graduate Route, but converting it to Skilled Worker is harder than in most subjects. Outside the large City firms, legal graduate salaries frequently sit below the £41,700 threshold. Plan accordingly.
Yes. A five-year BA LLB from TU, KU or PU is accepted for direct LLM entry at a wide range of UK universities, as is a three-year LLB in most cases.
An LLM is a law degree for law graduates. MSc Criminology accepts any social science background and leads toward policy, research and public-sector work rather than legal practice. If your interest is justice systems rather than practising law, criminology is often the better fit.
Yes. MSc Criminology programmes commonly accept BA Sociology, BA Psychology and other social science backgrounds from Nepali universities.
Honestly, there are stronger subjects for that specific goal — computing, cyber security, nursing and engineering all convert to sponsored work more readily. Choose an LLM because you want the legal qualification, not because you want a visa.
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination, the assessment route to qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales, alongside qualifying work experience. An LLM alone does not qualify you.
