Architecture in the UK for Nepali Students — Portfolio, ARB, and the Long Road
A strong subject academically, with a professional registration route that is longer than almost any Nepali applicant expects.
By Rahul Chhetri, Director, House of Admissions · Updated 20 Oct 2026
A UK architecture master’s needs a portfolio, and admission turns on it more than on your transcript. The harder truth is registration: becoming a registered architect in the UK via the Architects Registration Board is a multi-stage process taking years beyond the degree. If your goal is to work in UK construction sooner, construction project management is worth comparing honestly.
This page is the decision guide: who it suits, what it pays, and the honest risk. For the university list, entry requirements by Nepali qualification and the full cost breakdown, see the course page.
- Who Architecture suits
- B.Arch from TU, KU, PU or IOE; a portfolio is required and weighs more than the transcript
- Typical entry salary in the UK
- Architectural assistant roles modest; construction management higher
- Against the £41,700 threshold
- Assistant roles start below it; construction roles clear it sooner
- One-year cost of the visa itself
- £558 visa fee + £1,164 IHS = £1,722
- Our verdict on Architecture
- Good academically and for returning to Nepal; slow if UK registration is the goal
The Portfolio Decides Your Admission
For architecture, design and creative programmes the portfolio carries more weight than the transcript. A Nepali B.Arch graduate with a strong portfolio and a modest GPA is in a better position than the reverse. Include studio work, technical drawings, and at least one project documented from brief through to resolution — process matters as much as the finished image.
What ARB Registration Actually Involves
Registration with the Architects Registration Board is a staged process involving prescribed qualifications and professional experience, and it takes years beyond the degree. Overseas qualifications are assessed individually. A Nepali B.Arch plus a UK master’s does not produce a registered architect, and anyone implying otherwise is being careless with your time.
What Are the Realistic Alternatives?
If you want to practise as a registered architect in the UK, commit to the full ARB pathway with eyes open. If you want to work in UK construction sooner, an MSc in construction project management, urban design or sustainable building uses your B.Arch and reaches employment faster. If you intend to return to Nepal, a UK architecture master’s carries real weight without needing ARB at all.

Studio work, technical drawings, and at least one project documented from brief through to resolution. Process matters as much as the finished image — admissions tutors want to see how you think, not only what you produced.
For architecture and design programmes, generally yes. A strong portfolio with a modest GPA is a better position than a strong transcript with a weak portfolio.
Yes. It carries real weight with Nepali practices and does not require ARB registration to be valuable. For students intending to return, it is one of the better-value routes.
Consider an MSc in construction project management, urban design or sustainable building. These use your B.Arch, reach employment faster, and avoid the long ARB pathway. Project management explained.
Entry-level architectural assistant salaries are modest relative to the £41,700 Skilled Worker threshold. Construction and project management roles generally pay more at the same career stage.
It is one of the slower routes, because registration takes years and assistant salaries start low. Choose it because you want to be an architect, not because you want a work visa.
Several years. Registration with the Architects Registration Board follows accredited study and supervised practical experience, so plan well beyond the length of the master's.
