MSc Cyber Security in the UK from Nepal — Jobs, Salary and the NCSC Question
A specialist route with a genuine UK skills shortage behind it, and noticeably less competition from your own cohort than data science.
By Rahul Chhetri, Director, House of Admissions · Updated 20 Oct 2026
Cyber security is among the strongest subjects for staying in the UK. Entry salaries of £30,000–£40,000 can meet the new-entrant salary rate (at least £33,400), with the £41,700 general threshold reachable later, employers sponsor routinely, and the shortage is real. The thing to check before accepting an offer is NCSC certification, which is granted course by course, not university by university.
This page is the decision guide: who it suits, what it pays, and the honest risk. For the university list, entry requirements by Nepali qualification and the full cost breakdown, see the course page.
- Who MSc Cyber Security suits

- Typical entry salary in the UK
- £30,000–£40,000 at entry, higher with certifications
- Against the £41,700 threshold

What Is NCSC Certification and Why Does It Matter?
The UK National Cyber Security Centre certifies individual master’s programmes against a defined standard. It is the clearest quality signal in this subject and UK employers recognise it. Two programmes with near-identical names at different universities can differ completely on this, so check the specific course page before you accept.
Can You Enter Without a Computing Degree?
Much less easily than general computer science. Security programmes assume networking and operating-systems knowledge from week one, so conversion routes are few. If your bachelor’s is non-technical, do a computing conversion master’s first, or choose an MSc Computer Science with security modules.
Do You Need Certifications As Well?
Employers weigh them heavily. Security+, CEH and entry-level offensive security certifications are commonly taken during or just after the master’s, and the Graduate Route period is a practical window. A certification plus a UK degree is a materially stronger sponsorship position than the degree alone.
A significant share of UK cyber roles — government, defence, critical infrastructure — require security clearance that generally needs long UK residence or citizenship. Those jobs are not realistically open to a recent Nepali graduate. Target commercial security, consultancies and SOC roles instead, where sponsorship is common.

Both suit a CSIT background and pay similarly. Cyber has less competition from your own cohort, which matters when every second applicant has chosen data science. Data science compared.
