What Is ATAS and Why Does It Exist?
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) is a UK Government security clearance required for postgraduate research and some postgraduate taught courses in specific science, engineering, and technology subjects. It exists to prevent the proliferation of technology and knowledge that could be used in weapons development (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, 2026).
Who Needs ATAS Clearance?
ATAS generally applies to postgraduate courses (and sometimes PhD research) in fields such as advanced physics, certain engineering disciplines, materials science, computer science with specific specialisations, and some biological sciences with dual-use potential. It does not apply to most undergraduate degrees, business, arts, humanities, law, or standard social science programmes. Your university's admissions team will confirm whether your specific course code requires it.
How and When to Apply for ATAS
- Receive confirmation from your university that your course requires ATAS
- Apply online through the ATAS system with your course details, research topic (for research degrees), and personal information
- Processing typically takes up to 20 working days, though it can take longer during busy periods
- You receive an ATAS certificate, which must be submitted to your university before they issue your CAS
- Your CAS and subsequent visa application cannot proceed without valid ATAS clearance if your course requires it
Timeline Impact on Your Visa Application
Because ATAS must be completed before your CAS is issued, and CAS is required before you can apply for your visa, students on ATAS-relevant courses should apply for clearance as early as possible after receiving their offer — ideally 2–3 months before your intended CAS date, to avoid delaying your overall visa timeline.
