Sponsor Letter for a UK Student Visa from Nepal — Format and Evidence
Most Nepali applications are funded by a parent or a relative working abroad. UKVI accepts that readily — but only when the sponsor is properly evidenced and the money is genuinely accessible to the student.

A sponsor letter must state who the sponsor is, their relationship to you, that they consent to fund your studies, and the specific amount. It must be signed and dated, and accompanied by the sponsor’s bank statement and proof of relationship. Under UKVI rules, money held in a parent’s or legal guardian’s account is acceptable with their written consent and evidence of relationship.
This page covers the sponsor document itself. For proving where the sponsor’s money came from see source of funds; for the amount and holding period see the bank balance guide.

Who Can Sponsor a Nepali Student for a UK Visa?
Under UKVI financial evidence rules, funds may be held by you, or by a parent or legal guardian who provides written consent and evidence of the relationship. Official financial sponsorship from a government or international organisation is also accepted.
This matters in Nepal because a great many students are funded by an uncle, elder sibling or cousin, often working in the Gulf, the UK or Korea. That funding is real, but it does not automatically fit the parent-or-guardian category. The usual approach is for the relative to transfer the money to the student’s or a parent’s account well before the 28-day period begins, with remittance records retained to explain the origin.
What Must the Sponsor Letter Contain?
- Sponsor’s full name, address and identification as it appears on their citizenship certificate or passport.
- Relationship to the student, stated explicitly.
- Clear statement of consent — that the sponsor agrees to fund the student’s tuition and living costs in the UK.
- The specific amount being provided, in figures and words.
- Confirmation the funds are available to the student for their studies.
- Signature and date. Undated letters get questioned.
Which Documents Must Accompany the Letter?
| Document | What it proves | Nepali specifics |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsor bank statement | The money exists and has been held | Must be a Class A commercial bank; 28-day rule applies |
| Proof of relationship | The sponsor is who they claim to be | Birth certificate, or a relationship certificate from the ward office |
| Sponsor identification | Identity matches the letter | Citizenship certificate or passport |
| Source of the sponsor’s funds | The money is credibly explained | Salary, business, land sale or remittance records |
| Certified translation | The caseworker can actually read it | Required for any Nepali-language document |
UKVI’s rules name you, a parent or a legal guardian. Where a wider relative is funding the studies, the cleanest route is usually a transfer into the student’s or a parent’s account well before the 28-day clock starts, with remittance receipts kept to explain the origin. Leaving the money in the uncle’s account and writing a letter is the arrangement that most often runs into difficulty.

Under UKVI financial evidence rules, the funds may be held by you, or by a parent or legal guardian who gives written consent and evidences the relationship. Official financial sponsorship from a government or international organisation is also accepted.
Not straightforwardly. UKVI names you, a parent or a legal guardian. Where a wider relative funds the studies, the usual approach is a transfer into your own or a parent’s account well before the 28-day period begins, keeping remittance receipts to explain where it came from.
The sponsor’s full name and identification, their relationship to you, an explicit statement of consent to fund your studies, the specific amount in figures and words, confirmation the funds are available to you, and a signature with a date.
The sponsor’s bank statement covering the 28-day period, proof of relationship such as a birth certificate or a ward office relationship certificate, the sponsor’s citizenship certificate or passport, and evidence of where their money came from. Nepali-language documents need certified English translation.
Yes. The 28-day rule applies to whichever account holds the maintenance funds, and the balance must not dip below the required amount on any single day of that period.
Yes, provided the account is in the name of the parent or guardian giving consent and the statements clearly show the balance. Include the consent letter and proof of relationship as you would for any parental funding.
UKVI does not universally require notarisation, but a notarised letter is harder to question and many Nepali applicants provide one. Certified translation is the more important requirement if the letter is written in Nepali.
