Why Does a Name Mismatch Happen So Often in Nepal?
Nepali documents are issued by different authorities at different times, often transliterated from Devanagari independently. A middle name recorded on a school certificate may be absent from a citizenship certificate. Surnames with accepted variant spellings — Shrestha and Shreshtha, Karki and Karkee — can differ between a marksheet and a passport without anyone noticing until it matters.

How Do You Get a Ward Office Name-Verification Letter?
- Gather every document showing a name variant — citizenship certificate, passport, SEE and Grade 12 marksheets, bachelor's transcript.
- Go to the ward office of the municipality where your citizenship was issued, with originals and photocopies.
- Request a name-verification letter (often described as a "same person" or naam pharak letter) stating that the variants refer to one individual.
- Have it stamped and signed by the ward chairperson or authorised officer.
- Get it translated and notarised if it is issued in Nepali and you will submit it to a UK institution or UKVI.
- Attach it to every subsequent application — NOC, bank, visa.
Students commonly obtain the letter for the NOC, then find the bank and UKVI ask the same question weeks later. Get several stamped originals at the same visit. A second trip to the ward office in peak season can cost you an intake.
Does a Name Mismatch Affect the UK Visa Itself?
It can. UKVI checks your passport name against your CAS, your transcripts and your bank statement. An unexplained discrepancy raises a credibility question at exactly the point you least want one. Declaring and explaining it with a ward office letter is far safer than hoping nobody notices.
