Source of Funds for a UK Student Visa from Nepal — What UKVI Accepts

Holding the right balance is only half the test. A caseworker also asks where the money came from, and an unexplained deposit shortly before the 28-day window is one of the most avoidable refusal causes from Nepal.

UKVI does not publish a fixed list of acceptable income sources, but it does assess whether your balance is genuinely available and credibly explained. In practice that means documenting the origin: a land or property sale deed, business registration and tax records, salary slips, or remittance records. A large deposit made just before the 28-day period, with no explanation, is the single biggest red flag.

This page covers evidencing where the money came from. For how much you need and the 28-day mechanics see the bank balance guide; for a relative funding you see the sponsor letter guide.

What UKVI assesses
Whether funds are genuinely available and credibly explained
Biggest red flag
A large unexplained deposit just before the 28-day window
Holding period
28 consecutive days, balance never dipping
Where it must sit
A Nepal Rastra Bank-regulated Class A commercial bank
Not acceptable
Overdrafts, cryptocurrency, shares, pensions
Common Nepali sources
Land sale, business income, salary, remittance, education loan
Best practice
Deposit early and leave a clear paper trail

Why Does UKVI Ask Where Your Money Came From?

The financial requirement is not only about the amount. A caseworker is assessing whether the money is genuinely yours or your family's and genuinely available to you — rather than borrowed for 28 days to pass a test.

That is why a balance appearing suddenly, shortly before the holding period begins, attracts attention that the same amount accumulated over two years would not.

How Do Nepali Families Evidence Each Source?

Common sources of funds in Nepali UK student visa applications and the documents that evidence each. UKVI does not publish a prescribed list; these are the records that make a source credible and traceable.
SourceEvidence to keep Watch out for
Land or property sale Sale deed (lalpurja transfer), buyer payment record, bank credit matching the deed Cash sales with no banking trail — the deed alone may not be enough
Business income Business registration, PAN, audited accounts, tax clearance Declared income far below the amount being shown
Salary Employment letter, salary slips, salary credits in the statement Balance that cannot plausibly accumulate from the stated salary
Remittance from abroad Remittance receipts, sender's ID and relationship, regular credit history One large transfer rather than an established pattern
Education loan Sanction letter naming you, terms, collateral documents Sanctioned but undisbursed loans; know your rate and tenure
Agricultural income Land ownership records, local body income certification, sale receipts Hardest to evidence — start collecting early
The deposit timing problem

A student deposits NPR 25 lakhs three days before starting the 28-day clock, with no explanation of where it came from. The balance is correct, the holding period is correct, and the application still invites scrutiny. Deposit early and keep the trail — the same money, moved two months sooner, raises no question at all.

What Does UKVI Not Accept as Financial Evidence?

Regardless of source, certain instruments are excluded: overdrafts, cryptocurrency, stocks and shares, pension funds, accounts at institutions not regulated by the relevant national financial regulator, and accounts without electronic record keeping. UKVI financial evidence guidance, gov.uk, 2026

Frequently Asked Questions

Documents that show how the money was accumulated: a land or property sale deed with a matching bank credit, business registration with tax clearance, salary slips and salary credits, remittance receipts with an established pattern, or an education loan sanction letter. UKVI does not publish a fixed list — what matters is that the origin is traceable.

It is the single biggest red flag. The balance may be correct and the holding period correct, and the application can still attract scrutiny. Deposit early and keep the paper trail — the same money moved two months earlier raises no question.

Yes, and it is a very common Nepali funding route. Keep the sale deed, evidence of the buyer’s payment, and a bank credit that matches the deed amount and date. A cash sale with no banking trail is much harder to evidence.

Yes. Keep remittance receipts, the sender’s identification and proof of relationship. A regular history of transfers is far stronger than a single large one immediately before the application. If the relative is funding you rather than gifting, you also need a sponsor letter. Sponsor letter guide.

It can, but it is the hardest source to evidence because much of it is cash. Land ownership records, income certification from your local body and sale receipts all help. Start collecting these months before you need them.

Any of the 20 Nepal Rastra Bank-regulated Class A commercial banks. UKVI publishes no approved-bank list for Nepal; the actual requirement is a regulated institution with electronic record keeping. A co-operative or finance company can be rejected even with the correct amount.

Overdrafts, cryptocurrency, stocks and shares, pension funds, accounts at unregulated institutions, and accounts without electronic records. These are excluded by UKVI guidance irrespective of how legitimate the underlying money is.

Why Nepali Students Choose the UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is a popular higher-education destination for Nepali students. A UK bachelor’s degree typically takes three years and a taught master’s one year, which can reduce the total years of study compared with four-year systems elsewhere. Several UK universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL — rank in the global top tier, and more than 40 UK institutions appear in the QS World University Rankings top 200 (QS World University Rankings). Tuition varies by course and university and is listed on each university page; House of Admissions matches each student to programmes that fit their budget and academic profile.

The UK Student Visa, governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules, permits up to 20 hours of paid work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations (UK Home Office, gov.uk/student-visa), helping students offset living costs. The required 28-day maintenance balance is £10,539 for study outside London (≈ NPR 20.5 lakhs at NPR 195/£1) or £13,761 for London (≈ NPR 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files, with a reported 99% approval rate across applications it has supported (self-reported).

Living costs vary by city. Per HESA and UCAS estimates, students in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Loughborough typically budget around NPR 14–22 lakhs per year, compared with NPR 25 lakhs or more in London. Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter instead of IELTS — saving up to NPR 35,000 in examination and preparation costs and 2–3 months of preparation, where the chosen university accepts MOI.

After graduation, the Graduate Route grants unrestricted work with no job offer or sponsor required (UK Home Office, gov.uk/graduate-visa). Its length depends on when the Graduate Route application is filed, not on the course dates: 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years only for those filed on or before 31 December 2026 (PhD graduates keep 3 years either way). Because a student beginning a UK course now will file well after that cutoff, the 18-month figure is the realistic planning number. Graduate Route time does not count toward the standard 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock; the usual path is Graduate Route → switch to the Skilled Worker visa at the £38,700 salary threshold → Indefinite Leave to Remain after five qualifying years on the Skilled Worker route.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016 (self-reported), including 50+ Chevening placements (funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial awards), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Scholarship matching is included in HOA’s free service. Schools, colleges and organisations in Nepal can offer HOA’s UK guidance to their communities through a free partnership arrangement.
