What Is the NMC and Why Registration Is Mandatory
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the UK's professional regulatory body for nurses and midwives. Registration with the NMC is legally mandatory to practise as a nurse anywhere in the UK, whether you trained in the UK or internationally, including Nepal.
Two Routes to NMC Registration
Route 1 — UK-trained: Completing an NMC-approved UK nursing degree (BSc Nursing pre-registration) automatically leads to eligibility for registration upon graduation, subject to meeting English language requirements.
Route 2 — Internationally trained: Nurses who trained and qualified in Nepal can apply for NMC registration through a conversion process, which typically involves a documentation and competency assessment, an English language requirement, and in most cases the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
The OSCE Explained
The OSCE is a practical clinical skills examination assessing your competence across a series of simulated patient care scenarios. It is taken at NMC-approved UK test centres. Preparation courses are widely available, and some UK employers actively recruiting international nurses cover OSCE costs as part of their recruitment package.
English Language Requirements
NMC registration requires IELTS 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5 (or an equivalent accepted test), reflecting the patient-safety-critical nature of nursing communication. This is a higher bar than most other UK postgraduate programmes and should be factored into your preparation timeline well in advance.
After Registration — Starting Your NHS Career
Once registered, most newly registered nurses begin on NHS Band 5, with salary progression through the NHS pay banding system based on experience, further specialisation, and seniority over time. The NHS has an active, ongoing international recruitment programme, making nursing one of the more employer-demand-backed pathways for Nepali healthcare professionals.
