A UKVI credibility interview is a 15 to 30 minute conversation in English, usually by telephone or video, held after your biometrics and before the decision. It assesses whether you are a genuine student under Appendix Student. Selection is not a signal of doubt — but a poor interview leads to refusal under paragraph ST 14.1.

UKVI Credibility Interview in Nepal — What Happens If You Are Selected

Being selected for an interview is not a sign your application is in trouble. It is a routine check, and how you handle it matters far more than the fact of it.

What Is a UKVI Credibility Interview?

It is a genuine-student assessment carried out under Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules. A caseworker asks about your course, your university, your funding and your plans after graduating, and judges whether the answers are consistent with a person who intends to study.

It is not the same as a pre-CAS interview, which your university runs before issuing a CAS to protect its own compliance rating. The questions overlap heavily, so preparing for one prepares you for both.

Why Are More Nepali Students Being Interviewed?

Nepal’s UK visa refusal rate rose from 3.4% in Q1 2026 to 7.5% in Q2, crossing the 5% threshold that matters for university compliance ratings. Higher refusal rates in a market generally mean closer examination of applications from it. The Nepal visa data →

Selection is not a verdict

Students often assume an interview means their application is already in doubt. It does not. Interviews are a sampling mechanism as much as a targeted one. What matters is the interview itself.

What Does the Officer Actually Assess?

The five things a UKVI caseworker assesses in a Student route credibility interview, and the failure most often seen from Nepali applicants in each.
CriterionMost common failure
Genuine intention to study Cannot name modules on the course
Credible course and university choice Reasons that would apply to any university
Financial capability and source of funds Vagueness about where the money came from
Credible immigration intentions Post-study plans unrelated to the course
English language ability Spoken level well below the certificate submitted

How Should You Prepare?

Direct answer

Know your own application, and do not memorise answers. Officers are trained to identify rehearsed responses, and a scripted answer is itself treated as a credibility indicator. Read your CAS, read your course page, and be able to explain your funding in your own words — differently each time you practise.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Selection is routine and is partly a sampling mechanism. It is not a signal that your application is already in doubt. What determines the outcome is how the interview goes, not the fact of being interviewed.

Typically 15 to 30 minutes. A straightforward case can finish in 10 minutes and a case with concerns can run longer. Length alone tells you nothing about the outcome.

Yes, and the interview is itself a live assessment of your English, independent of your IELTS certificate or Medium of Instruction letter. A large gap between certificate and spoken performance is a documented refusal ground.

A pre-CAS interview is run by the university before issuing your CAS, to protect its own compliance rating. A UKVI credibility interview is run by the Home Office after you submit the visa application. The questions overlap heavily.

Prepare the content, not a script. Officers are trained to detect rehearsed answers, and a memorised response is a credibility risk in itself. Question bank with model answers.

The application is refused under paragraph ST 14.1 of Appendix Student, on the ground that you are not a genuine student. That refusal must be declared on future applications. Declaring a refusal.

No — interviews are selected rather than universal. But Nepal’s refusal rate rose from 3.4% to 7.5% between Q1 and Q2 2026, and higher-refusal markets generally see more scrutiny. Assume you will be interviewed and prepare accordingly.

Ask the officer to repeat or rephrase it. Answer honestly and briefly; guessing at a question you did not understand can hurt your credibility.
