If your UK Student visa decision from Nepal is past UKVI's 3-week standard, it is not a refusal. Check your email and spam folder, track your passport on VFS with your GWF number, contact UKVI after 15 working days and ask your university for its latest enrolment date. House of Admissions (HOA) gives free guidance from Kathmandu and Pokhara.

UK Student Visa Delayed from Nepal? What to Do Next (2026)

Checked against UKVI and VFS guidance Last Updated: 20 Oct 2026 · Sources: UKVI & VFS Global
Quick answer

The official UKVI standard processing time for a UK Student visa from Nepal is 3 weeks (15 working days) from the date of your VFS biometrics appointment. In September 2026:

  • HOA casework (as of 15 September 2026): many of the Nepali files HOA tracked took 8+ weeks. This is HOA's own observation, not a UKVI statistic.
  • Tracking: You can track your passport dispatch via the VFS Global portal using your GWF number.
  • What to do: Do not contact UKVI until the 15 working day threshold has passed. Check your email (including spam) for interview or additional document requests.

Waiting past the UKVI published processing standard is stressful, but it is not a refusal and is not an outcome of any kind. It means your file requires further checks or is caught in high-volume queues. This guide explains how to track your status, why Nepali decisions run late, and how to escalate your case.

This page is for applicants whose decision is already late. For normal timings by service, see UK visa processing time from Nepal; if you have been refused, see reapply or appeal.

How to track your UK visa status via VFS Nepal

While you cannot track the internal decision-making process of UKVI caseworkers, you can track the physical movement of your passport through VFS Global. If a decision has been made, VFS will update your tracking status.

  1. Visit the official VFS Global Nepal website.
  2. Navigate to the "Track your application" section.
  3. Enter your GWF Number (found on your visa application printout).
  4. Enter your registered email address or date of birth.

Note: If the VFS tracker says "Processed application has been forwarded to UK Visas and Immigration", it means your file is still in the queue. You must wait for it to say the passport is ready for collection.

What UKVI Actually Commits To

Two separate things are often confused, and the difference decides whether you have grounds to chase your application.

The first is the customer service standard: the published time in which UKVI aims to decide an application. For the Student route outside the UK, that is 3 weeks (UKVI, gov.uk).

The second is the current processing time. UKVI states that processing times are based on the UK working week (Monday to Friday) and include UK public holidays, but not Nepali public holidays. Dashain or Tihar closures at VFS Nepal do not stop the UKVI clock, but UK bank holidays sit inside it.

When to chase UKVI says it will contact you if your application will take longer than the standard. If 15 working days have passed without contact, it is reasonable to contact UKVI. Silence inside the 3 weeks is normal; silence past it is the trigger for action.

4 Official Reasons for a Delayed Decision

UKVI publishes several circumstances where a decision may exceed the standard time. Every single one is a process reason rather than a signal of a refusal. These four are highly relevant to Nepali applicants:

1. Document Verification (Name Mismatches)

Academic transcripts, bank statements and sponsor documents can be sent to the issuing bodies for verification. Nepal has a specific friction: name transliteration from Devanagari to Roman script often varies between the passport, citizenship certificate and academic transcripts. Mismatches can lead to verification checks that slow the file down.

2. The Credibility Interview

UKVI conducts credibility interviews to assess the "genuine student" requirement. Attending an interview and hearing nothing for weeks afterwards is a documented pattern. The interview is evidence-gathering; the record must still go to a caseworker for a final decision.

3. High Visa Demand (The September Rush)

July to September is the peak of the UK application year worldwide. Volume alone lengthens queues, especially for applications that require a second look.

4. Further Evidence Requested (Check your Spam!)

This is the one you can control. UKVI may email you requesting updated bank statements or TB certificates. These emails frequently land in Spam or Junk folders. Check daily.

Live Nepal Data: September 2026 Cycle

Disclaimer: What follows is House of Admissions' own casework observation across its own applicant file as at 15 September 2026. It is not a UKVI official statistic.

Across the September 2026 intake, HOA is tracking applicants whose decisions have passed the published 3-week standard by a substantial margin. The pattern is consistent: biometrics completed at VFS Kathmandu in June, a credibility interview in late June, and no decision recorded by mid-August.

The lower bar shows elapsed time in House of Admissions’ own tracked files (self-reported casework data, not a UKVI statistic).

Step-by-Step: How to Escalate a Delayed Visa

Work through these steps in order. Check your own records before contacting UKVI, so your enquiry has the right dates and reference.

1

Confirm your exact start date

The clock starts the day you gave fingerprints at VFS Global in Kathmandu, not the day you paid online. Count exactly 15 UK working days from that date.

2

Check Spam and UKVI Portal

A missed email requesting a new bank statement will stall your file. Check spam, junk, and log into your UKVI portal to ensure no actions are pending.

3

Contact UKVI Official Support

Once 15 working days pass, use the UKVI contact options for applications made outside the UK at gov.uk/contact-ukvi-inside-outside-uk (check any charges on that page). State clearly: "15 working days have passed since my biometrics on [Date]. I have received no contact or requests for information." Include your GWF number.

4

Email your University Sponsor

Email your university's Admissions and International Compliance teams. Provide your GWF number and ask for the "latest permitted enrolment date" so you can plan your next move.

5

Freeze your Bank Account

Do not move your funds. If you end up having to withdraw and reapply, UKVI requires financial evidence dated within 31 days of the new application, showing 28 continuous days of held funds.

Wait or Defer: Making the Right Call

Do not let your course start date pass while blindly hoping. Act strategically based on your university's latest enrolment date.

When to Keep Waiting

  • Your university's "latest enrolment date" is still 1-2 weeks away.
  • Your evidenced bank funds are stable and belong to your parents (not high-interest loans).
  • Your CAS is still valid and has not been withdrawn by the university.

When to Defer to Jan 2027

  • Your latest enrolment date passes this week.
  • Your funds are borrowed and the interest is accumulating heavily.
  • Note: Deferring to Jan 2027 does not shorten your Graduate Route (PSW) visa entitlement.

Frequently Asked Questions

UKVI aims to decide Student visa applications made outside the UK within 3 weeks of your biometrics appointment. In HOA's own tracked September 2026 files (as of 15 September 2026), many took more than 8 weeks.

Use the VFS Global Nepal tracking page with your GWF number. It shows where your passport is, not how far UKVI has got with the decision.

No. A delay does not predict a refusal. It usually means extra checks, a credibility interview or a busy queue.

Once 3 weeks (15 UK working days) have passed since your biometrics with no contact. Use the UKVI contact options for applications made outside the UK on GOV.UK and quote your GWF number.

No. Priority (£500) and, where offered, Super Priority (£1,000) must be bought when you apply. They cannot be added once your application is waiting in the standard queue.

No. If you have to withdraw and reapply, you will need new evidence: funds held for 28 days, with the statement dated within 31 days of the new application.

Ask for the latest date you can enrol, whether you can defer, and whether a new CAS would be issued for a later intake. Give them your GWF number.

No. The length depends on when you apply for the Graduate visa. Applications from 1 January 2027 get 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates, and both September 2026 and January 2027 starters will apply after that date.

The £558 application fee is usually refunded only if UKVI has not started processing, which is rare after biometrics. The Immigration Health Surcharge is normally refunded if you withdraw or are refused; check GOV.UK.
