What Is the UCAS Personal Statement?

The UCAS personal statement is a 4,000-character essay (approximately 600–700 words) that you write as part of your UK undergraduate application. All five universities you apply to via UCAS see the same statement, so it must be written for your subject area, not for a specific university.

Your personal statement should answer one key question: Why do you want to study this subject, and why are you well-suited to succeed at university level?

The Classic Structure

A reliable structure that works for most subjects:

• Translating too directly from Nepali — have someone fluent in British English review your draft
• Mentioning specific universities — your statement goes to all five, so never name a specific university

Your Nepali background can be a genuine strength:
