What Is the UCAS Personal Statement?
The UCAS personal statement is a 4,000-character essay (approximately 600–700 words) that you write as part of your UK undergraduate application. All five universities you apply to via UCAS see the same statement, so it must be written for your subject area, not for a specific university.
Your personal statement should answer one key question: Why do you want to study this subject, and why are you well-suited to succeed at university level?
The Classic Structure
A reliable structure that works for most subjects:
- Opening hook (1–2 sentences): an engaging reason why you chose this subject — NOT "I have always been interested in..."
- Academic interest (40%): what you've read, studied, or explored beyond the classroom that shows genuine intellectual curiosity
- Relevant experience (40%): work experience, volunteering, projects, clubs that directly relate to your subject
- Future goals (20%): what you hope to do with the degree — keep it realistic and related to the subject
Common Mistakes Nepali Students Make
- Opening with "I want to study X because..." — overly generic
- Listing achievements without explaining their relevance to the subject
- Translating too directly from Nepali — have someone fluent in British English review your draft
- Mentioning specific universities — your statement goes to all five, so never name a specific university
- Being too modest — UK applications expect confident self-promotion; this is culturally different from Nepal
Specific Advice for Nepali Applicants
Your Nepali background can be a genuine strength:
- Work experience in a family business, community role, or Nepal-specific sector can be compelling if tied to your subject
- If you are applying for development, politics, or social sciences, your perspective as someone from a developing country adds genuine value
- Extracurricular activities like trekking, competitive sports, or cultural performance can demonstrate character — but only mention if relevant
