The general police registration requirement for foreign nationals in the UK was withdrawn, and most students no longer need to register. However, conditions are imposed individually: read your own visa decision letter and your eVisa conditions. If a registration condition appears there, it applies to you regardless of what any website says.

Do Nepali Students Still Need to Register with the Police in the UK?

This requirement was removed, but stale advice is everywhere and some students still arrive expecting to queue at a police station in their first week.

What Is the Current Position?

The blanket requirement for certain foreign nationals to register with the police after arriving in the UK was withdrawn. For most Nepali students arriving today there is nothing to do.

Read your own decision letter anyway

Immigration conditions are imposed on individuals, not on nationalities. Your decision letter and your eVisa set out what applies to you. If a registration condition is listed there, it applies — and a condition breached because a website said otherwise is still a breach.

What Should You Actually Do in Your First Week?

  1. Complete university enrolment. This is the one that matters for your visa — your sponsor must confirm your enrolment.
  2. Register with a GP. You have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge; use it.
  3. Open a UK bank account. Take your passport, eVisa share code, and a university enrolment letter showing your address.
  4. Apply for a National Insurance number if you plan to work part-time.
  5. Check your eVisa conditions for anything specific to you, including work limits.

Why Does Outdated Advice Persist?

Direct answer

Because consultancy blog posts are rarely revisited after publication. A page written in 2019 still ranks, still reads as current, and still tells students to visit a police station that no longer needs to see them. Check the date on any page giving you a procedural instruction — including this one.

Breaching a visa condition is serious regardless of the reason. If you think a condition may apply and you have missed it, contact your university international office immediately — they deal with this and can advise.

Complete university enrolment, register with a GP, open a bank account, apply for a National Insurance number if you will work, and read your eVisa conditions. Full arrival checklist.

Your international office is the right place to ask on arrival. They handle immigration compliance for all their international students and will know the current position.

Yes, entirely. GP registration is healthcare and is worth doing immediately. Council tax exemption is a separate matter for full-time students. Neither is police registration.
