A police clearance certificate is not a standard requirement for the UK Student route. It is required for certain specific routes and circumstances, and it is sometimes requested by universities, employers or professional registers rather than by UKVI. Do You Need a Police Clearance Certificate for the UK from Nepal?

Most Nepali students do not need one for a standard Student visa, and a significant number pay for one anyway because someone told them to.

Do You Actually Need One?

Direct answer

For a standard UK Student visa, generally no. A criminal record certificate is required for some specific immigration routes and circumstances rather than across the board. Read your own application requirements and your university’s offer conditions before assuming you need one — and before paying for one.

Who Asks for It, If Not UKVI?

Who may ask a Nepali student for a police clearance certificate, and why. UKVI is often not the requester.
WhoWhy
Certain visa routesRoute-specific requirements, not the standard Student route
UniversitiesOccasionally for placements involving vulnerable people
Professional registersHealthcare, teaching and similar regulated fields
EmployersPre-employment checks after you graduate
Do not buy one because an agent said so

Students are routinely told to obtain documents nobody asked for, sometimes by agencies that charge for arranging them. Before you spend money and a day of queueing, find the actual requirement in writing — in your visa application guidance, your offer letter conditions, or the professional register’s own page.

If You Do Need One, How Do You Get It?

  1. Confirm exactly what is being asked for — a police clearance certificate, a police report, or something else. The names are used loosely.
  2. Apply through Nepal Police, taking your citizenship certificate, passport, photographs and the completed application.
  3. Allow time. Like every Nepali administrative process, it is slower in peak season.
  4. Get it translated if it is issued in Nepali and you are submitting it to a UK body. Translation requirements →
  5. Check the validity period the receiving body will accept — an old certificate may not be accepted.

You May Need One Later Rather Than Now

The more common scenario for Nepali graduates is needing a clearance certificate after study — for NMC or another professional registration, or for employment. If that is your field, it is worth knowing the process exists rather than obtaining the certificate now, since validity periods mean an early one is often useless by the time it is wanted.

For a standard Student route application, generally no. A criminal record certificate is required for certain specific routes and circumstances rather than across the board. Check your own application guidance before paying for one.

More often universities, professional registers or employers than UKVI — particularly for placements involving vulnerable people, and for regulated fields like healthcare and teaching.

Through Nepal Police, with your citizenship certificate, passport, photographs and a completed application. Allow time — like every Nepali administrative process it slows in peak season.

If it is issued in Nepali and you are submitting it to a UK body, yes — a certified English translation with the translator’s date, credentials and contact details. Translation requirements.

The receiving body decides what it will accept, and validity expectations vary. This is why obtaining one early “just in case” often wastes the money — it may have aged out by the time anyone asks.

Ask them to show you the requirement in writing, in your visa guidance or your offer conditions. Students are routinely told to obtain documents nobody asked for, sometimes by agencies that charge for arranging them.

Possibly, and this is the more common scenario — for professional registration such as NMC, or for pre-employment checks. Knowing the process exists is more useful than holding an old certificate.

Through the Nepal Police online application, usually collected from Police Headquarters; check the current process and documents before you apply.
