Is Studying in the UK Worth It, Compared With Staying in Nepal?
This is the question behind every family conversation about study abroad, and the one the entire consultancy industry has a financial interest in not asking.

Sometimes, and not always. A UK degree is worth the NPR 50–70 lakhs when it opens work you cannot reach from Nepal, or when you intend to stay and your subject clears the £41,700 Skilled Worker threshold. It is not worth it when the same career is reachable in Nepal, or when funding it means borrowing against the family home for a subject with weak salary outcomes.
This page is the comparison with not going at all. For the cost arithmetic see the affordability framework; for other destinations see UK vs Australia.
- UK cost, one-year master’s
- NPR 50–70 lakhs all-in
- Opportunity cost
- One to two years not earning in Nepal
- Worth it when
- The work is unreachable from Nepal
- Worth it when
- You intend to stay and your subject clears £41,700
- Not worth it when
- The same career is reachable at home
- Not worth it when
- It means borrowing against the family home for weak outcomes
- Who benefits from you not asking
- Every consultancy that charges a fee
The Comparison, Set Up Honestly
Most discussions compare a UK salary with a Nepali salary and stop there, which makes going look obvious. The real comparison has four terms, and two of them are usually left out.
| Usually counted | Usually omitted |
|---|---|
| UK tuition and living costs | One to two years of Nepali earnings forgone |
| The salary difference if you stay abroad | The probability that you actually stay |
That second omission matters most. A plan that only works if you secure a sponsored job at £41,700 is a plan with a probability attached to it, and the probability varies enormously by subject. Check yours.
When the UK Is Clearly Worth It
- The work genuinely does not exist in Nepal. Advanced research, specialised cyber security, certain clinical and technical specialisms.
- You intend to stay, and your subject reaches the threshold. Computing, cyber security, nursing, engineering and finance convert to sponsored work far more reliably than most.
- The qualification is the gate. Some Nepali employers, NGOs and development organisations recruit specifically for a UK master’s — an MPH is a clear example.
- You have a scholarship. Chevening and university merit awards change the arithmetic completely, and cost nothing to apply for.
When It Honestly Is Not
When the same career is reachable through a Nepali qualification and experience. When funding requires borrowing against the family home for a subject whose graduates do not reliably clear the salary threshold. And when the student cannot articulate what the degree is for beyond leaving — which a UKVI credibility interview will also detect.
Why Nobody Else Asks This
Because the industry is paid when you go. A consultancy charging you a fee has no reason to tell you that staying might be better; nor does one paid by universities, including us. Weigh this page knowing that, and check the reasoning rather than trusting the source. We would rather lose an application than process one we do not believe in — but you should test that claim, not accept it.
Not sure whether it is worth it?Tell us your subject, your funding source and what you want afterwards. We will give you a straight answer, including telling you not to go if that is what the numbers say.

Two: one to two years of Nepali earnings forgone while studying, and the probability that you actually stay abroad. A plan that only works if you secure a £41,700 sponsored job carries a probability that varies enormously by subject.
When the same career is reachable through a Nepali qualification and experience, when funding requires borrowing against the family home for a subject with weak salary outcomes, or when the student cannot say what the degree is for beyond leaving.
In several fields, clearly. NGOs, development organisations and international employers in Nepal recruit specifically for UK qualifications, and public health, agriculture and law are all stronger on return than they are for staying in the UK.
Ask what the graduate salary is against the £41,700 threshold, and how reliably that subject converts into sponsored work. Computing, cyber security, nursing and engineering convert well; hospitality and law generally do not. Check by subject.
Substantially. Chevening removes the whole cost and university merit awards remove part of it, and applying costs nothing. A family for whom the answer was no often finds it becomes yes. UK scholarships for Nepali students.
Most would not, and you should factor that in when reading anyone’s advice including ours — we are paid by universities when a student enrols. Check the reasoning on this page rather than trusting the source.
It can be, in fields where UK study adds skills or recognition employers in Nepal pay for. Compare the total cost with realistic salaries in your field.

Most refusals from Nepal come from paperwork, not from weak profiles. We check every document against the UKVI and MoEST requirements before you pay a fee. House of Admissions is free to students at every stage — we are paid by universities after enrolment, never by you.
