Stop persuading and start answering. Nepali parents rarely object to the UK itself. They are worried about money that does not come back, a child who does not come back, and being cheated by an agent. Address those three directly, with figures, and most of the resistance goes. Bring a written plan, not an argument.

Talking to Parents

How to Talk to Your Parents About Studying in the UK

Most of these conversations fail for the same reason: the student argues about wanting to go, and the parent is worried about something else entirely.

Stop persuading and start answering. Nepali parents rarely object to the UK itself. They are worried about money that does not come back, a child who does not come back, and being cheated by an agent. Address those three directly, with figures, and most of the resistance goes. Bring a written plan, not an argument.

This page is written for the student. To give your parents something to read themselves, send them the parents’ guide; for the numbers, use the affordability framework.

What parents usually fear
Wasted money, permanent emigration, being cheated
What they rarely fear
The UK itself
What works
A written plan with figures
What does not work
Comparing yourself to a cousin who went
Bring
Course, cost, funding source, and what happens if refused
Offer
That they speak to the consultancy directly, without you
Expect
More than one conversation

What Are They Actually Worried About?

Almost never the UK. In our experience the objection is one of three things, and students usually answer the wrong one.

The three concerns behind most parental resistance to UK study in Nepali families, and what actually answers each one.
The real worryHow it gets said What answers it
The money will not come back “It is too expensive” A written cost breakdown and what the course leads to
You will not come back “Who will look after us” Saying plainly what your plan is, including if it is to stay
Someone will cheat us “These consultancies are all frauds” Letting them meet the consultancy without you

How Should You Actually Open It?

  1. Bring a written plan, not a request. One page: the course, the university, the total cost in NPR, where the money comes from, and what job it leads to.
  2. Name the risk yourself before they do. Say what happens if the visa is refused. A student who has thought about failure sounds serious; one who has not sounds like they are dreaming.
  3. Answer the return question honestly. If you intend to stay in the UK, say so. Parents discover it eventually, and discovering it later is far worse than hearing it now.
  4. Offer to step out of the room. Let your parents talk to the consultancy directly. If an agency will not speak to your family without you present, that itself is information.
  5. Expect more than one conversation. Nobody agrees to spend NPR 40 lakhs in an evening.
Do not compare yourself to someone else’s child

“But Sujan’s son went” loses this conversation every time. It shifts the discussion onto other families and away from your plan, and it invites the obvious reply about what happened to somebody else’s son who went and never finished.

What If They Still Say No?

Direct answer

Find out whether it is “no” or “not like this”. Those are very different answers. Resistance to a NPR 40 lakh master’s is often not resistance to the UK — it may dissolve entirely with a scholarship application, a cheaper university, or a year of working first. Ask which one it is before you give up or dig in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Give them a written breakdown rather than a reassurance: tuition, the £1,722 visa and health surcharge, maintenance, and Nepal-side costs, all in NPR. Then say what the course leads to and what it pays. Affordability framework.

Honestly. If you intend to stay, say so now — parents find out eventually and finding out later is far worse. If you intend to return, say what you will return to, in terms of a specific job or plan rather than a promise.

Agree that many charge fees they should not, then let them test it. Send them to talk to the consultancy without you and ask directly what it costs. What to look for.

No — and not for moral reasons. You cannot evidence £10,539 of maintenance held for 28 days without the person who holds it, and a sponsor letter needs their signature. The application stops without them.

Ask what specifically they want that outcome to produce, then compare honestly. For some subjects and some families, staying is the better financial decision. For others it is not. Run the comparison rather than assuming.

Longer than one conversation, and that is reasonable. Nobody commits NPR 40 lakhs in an evening. Bring information, leave it with them, and come back.

Yes, and we would rather. We will give them the same figures we gave you, in Nepali if they prefer, and we charge nothing — which is usually the thing they most want to verify.

The full cost in rupees, the funds needed for the visa, how they will be raised, what happens if the visa is refused, and your realistic plan after graduation.
