The One-Year UK Master’s — Why It Matters More Than Nepali Students Realise
The UK’s single biggest structural advantage over Australia, Canada and Germany is not the teaching. It is that the degree takes half as long.

A one-year UK master’s saves a Nepali family an entire second year of tuition and living costs — realistically NPR 25 to 40 lakhs — and returns you to earning a year sooner. UK employers treat it as a full master’s, because it is the standard structure there. The trade-off is genuine: it is intense, and there is less time to find work before the Graduate Route clock starts.
This page explains the length advantage. For destination-by-destination comparisons see UK vs Australia, UK vs Canada and UK vs Germany.
- UK master’s
- Typically 1 year (12 months)
- Australia, Canada, Germany
- Typically 2 years
- Second year avoided
- Roughly NPR 25–40 lakhs in tuition and living
- Earning again
- One year sooner
- Employer view in the UK
- Standard and fully recognised
- The trade-off
- Intense, with less time to find work before graduating
- Dissertation
- Usually over the summer, after taught modules
What the Second Year Actually Costs
It is not only a second tuition payment. It is a second year of rent, food and transport, a second year of visa and health surcharge exposure, and a year in which you are paying rather than earning. For a Nepali family funding from savings or a loan, this is usually the single largest difference between destinations.
| Second-year cost | Roughly |
|---|---|
| Additional tuition | NPR 20–40 lakhs depending on destination |
| Additional living costs | NPR 18–25 lakhs |
| A year not earning | Your own opportunity cost |
| Additional visa and health exposure | Varies by country |
Do Employers Take a One-Year Master’s Seriously?
In the UK, yes, without qualification — it is the standard structure and no UK employer regards it as lesser. The same is true of Nepali employers and international organisations, who recognise UK qualifications readily. The question arises mainly in countries whose own master’s are two years; if you intend to work in one of those specifically, check how they treat it.
The Honest Trade-Off
Taught modules typically run through two semesters with a dissertation over the summer. There is little slack for retakes, and considerably less time to build UK work experience before you graduate. Students who intend to convert the degree into a sponsored job should start looking in the first term, not the last — particularly with the Graduate Route moving to 18 months for applications filed from 1 January 2027.
When Is a Two-Year Programme Better?
When you want a placement year, which in some subjects is what actually produces the job offer — hospitality is the clearest example. When you are converting into a new field and need longer to build credibility. And when you specifically want more time in-country before the post-study clock starts.

Yes. It is the standard UK structure and is fully recognised by UK employers, Nepali employers and international organisations. The question mainly arises in countries whose own master’s degrees run two years.
Realistically NPR 25 to 40 lakhs against a two-year programme elsewhere — a second tuition payment plus a second year of living costs — and it returns you to earning a year sooner.
It is more intense. Taught modules run through two semesters with a dissertation over the summer, and there is little slack for retakes. The content is not reduced; the time is.
Generally yes, though their own master’s degrees typically run two years. If you specifically intend to work in one of those countries afterwards, check how their professional bodies treat it before choosing.
It is tighter, and this is the real trade-off. Start looking in your first term rather than your last, particularly with the Graduate Route moving to 18 months for applications filed from 1 January 2027.
When you want a placement year — in hospitality especially, that placement is often what produces the job offer. When you are converting into a new field. Or when you specifically want more time in-country before the post-study clock starts.
Yes — many offer a version with a placement or industry year, which extends the course to about two years. It costs more and requires more maintenance funds to evidence, but in some subjects it is the better choice.
