Is Germany’s Free Tuition Really Cheaper Than the UK?
“Free education” pulls Nepali students harder than any other claim in study abroad. It is true, and it is also not the whole cost.
By Rahul Chhetri, Director, House of Admissions · Updated 20 Oct 2026
Public university tuition in Germany is genuinely free or near-free, which is a real advantage over £14,000–£22,000 in the UK. But you must deposit around EUR 11,904 in a blocked account before arriving, most well-regarded programmes and almost all employment require German, and degrees typically run two years. Free tuition is real; free study is not.
This page answers the free-tuition question. For the UK’s full cost see the affordability framework; for other destinations see UK vs Australia.

Is the Free Tuition Claim Actually True?
Yes. Most German public universities charge no tuition fee to international students, or a small semester contribution. This is not marketing. Against UK tuition of £14,000–£22,000 — NPR 27 to 43 lakhs — it is a very large difference and deserves to be taken seriously.
What Is the Blocked Account, and Why Does It Matter More Than It Sounds?
Germany requires around EUR 11,904 deposited into a blocked account (Sperrkonto) before you arrive, released to you in monthly instalments. The UK asks you to evidence £10,539 in a Nepali bank for 28 days — the money stays in Nepal until you choose to move it.
For a Nepali family this difference is real. The German requirement sends a large sum out of the country, through the NOC and the 3% education tax, before the student has arrived. The UK requirement does not.
The Language Question Nobody Answers Honestly
Germany has many English-taught master’s programmes and they are legitimate. But most German employment requires German, often to a professional standard, and the graduates who convert a German degree into a German career are overwhelmingly those who learned the language. Studying in English and expecting to work in English is the mistake that costs students their post-study years.

| Visa fee | Low | £558 + £1,164 IHS |
Australia, Canada and Germany all revised their student financial requirements recently, and comparison websites are slow to catch up. We can demonstrate this: most aggregator pages still quote the UK visa fee as £490 or £524 and maintenance as £821 a month. The correct figures are £558 and £1,171 — we verified them against GOV.UK. Treat every non-UK figure on this page, including ours, as a starting point to confirm with that country’s own immigration authority.
Who Should Genuinely Choose Germany?
Students who will learn German, who are targeting engineering, manufacturing or research where Germany is genuinely world-leading, and who can fund the blocked account. For that student it is an excellent and under-used option, and we will say so.
Students who want an English-speaking career, need to finish in one year, or cannot send EUR 11,904 out of Nepal before arriving should look at the UK instead.

Tuition at most German public universities is genuinely free or near-free, including for international students. That part of the claim is true. It does not mean studying there is free — you must deposit around EUR 11,904 in a blocked account before arriving.
A Sperrkonto — around EUR 11,904 deposited before you arrive and released to you in monthly instalments. Unlike the UK, where you evidence £10,539 in a Nepali bank for 28 days, this money must actually leave Nepal upfront.
Yes, many master’s programmes are taught in English. But most German employment requires German, often to professional standard. Studying in English and expecting to work in English is the mistake that costs students their post-study years.
On tuition, clearly yes. Overall it depends on whether you count the second year, the blocked account leaving Nepal upfront, and the cost of reaching working German. For a student who will learn German and can fund the blocked account, Germany is genuinely cheaper.
Typically two years, against one in the UK. That is a second year of living costs and a year later returning to earning — the same arithmetic that applies to Australia and Canada.
Yes. Money leaving Nepal for study goes through the MoEST No Objection Certificate process and attracts the 3% education tax on the amount sent, the same as tuition would. How sending money works.
A student who will genuinely learn German, is targeting engineering, manufacturing or research, and can fund the blocked account. It is an excellent and under-used option for that student. For an English-speaking career or a one-year timeline, the UK fits better.
Most charge no tuition for many courses but do charge a semester contribution, and some states charge fees for non-EU students. Check each university.
