UK vs Japan and South Korea for Nepali Students — The Language Question
Japan and Korea have grown fast as destinations for Nepali students, often on the promise of low fees and part-time work. The thing that decides your outcome is language.
By Rahul Chhetri, Director, House of Admissions · Updated 20 Oct 2026
Japan and Korea can be cheaper on tuition and both have real demand for workers. But the degree and the career both depend on the language — Japanese or Korean to a working standard — and language schools are not university programmes. The UK costs more and gives you an English-language degree that transfers anywhere, including back to Nepal.
This page compares the UK with Japan and South Korea. For the western destinations see UK vs Australia and UK vs Canada.

Language Is Not a Detail Here
In the UK you study in English and work in English, and you already speak it. In Japan or Korea you will need Japanese or Korean to a working standard for most degree programmes and for essentially all graduate employment. That is a multi-year investment before the degree even starts, and it is the single factor that decides whether the move works.
The Language School Distinction
A large share of Nepali students arriving in Japan and Korea enter through language schools with the intention of progressing to a degree. Some do. Many end up working long hours in part-time jobs, with no degree and no clear route to one. If you are being sold a “pathway”, ask precisely what the degree admission requirement is at the end of it, and what proportion of students reach it. Get the answer in writing.
How Do They Compare?
| Factor | UK | Japan / Korea |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Higher | Generally lower |
| Language to study | English — you have it | Japanese or Korean for most programmes |
| Language to work | English | Essential, working standard |
| Degree portability | Transfers internationally | Strong locally, less portable |
| Master’s length | 1 year | Typically 2, plus language preparation |
| Post-study route | Graduate Route, no job offer needed | Employment-dependent |
Australia, Canada and Germany all revised their student financial requirements recently, and comparison websites are slow to catch up. We can demonstrate this: most aggregator pages still quote the UK visa fee as £490 or £524 and maintenance as £821 a month. The correct figures are £558 and £1,171 — we verified them against GOV.UK. Treat every non-UK figure on this page, including ours, as a starting point to confirm with that country’s own immigration authority.
Who Should Choose Japan or Korea?
Students who are genuinely committed to learning the language, who want to build a career in that country specifically, and who are entering a real degree programme rather than an open-ended language pathway. For that student both countries offer excellent technical education at a fraction of UK tuition.
Students who want an internationally portable qualification, who intend to return to Nepal, or who want to finish in one year and work in English, should look at the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions
On tuition, generally yes. The comparison changes once you count the time and cost of reaching working Japanese or Korean, and the typical two-year degree length plus language preparation.
Some programmes are taught in English, particularly at postgraduate level. But graduate employment in both countries generally requires the local language to a working standard, so studying in English without learning it limits what follows.
A language school is not a university programme. Many Nepali students enter on that basis intending to progress to a degree and do not. Ask precisely what the degree admission requirement is at the end, and what proportion of students reach it — in writing.
Yes, degrees from recognised universities are. The practical difference is portability: a UK degree in English transfers readily to third countries and to international employers in Nepal, while a Japanese or Korean degree is strongest within that country.
The UK Graduate Route requires no job offer and no sponsor — you get 2 years (18 months for bachelor’s and master’s applications filed from 1 January 2027) to find work. Japan and Korea generally tie post-study stay to securing employment, which in turn requires the language.
That is a different decision, and an honest one to make explicitly. Both countries have genuine labour demand. But entering on a student route with work as the actual intention creates problems with the study itself and with the visa. Decide which you are doing.
A student committed to learning the language, targeting a career in that country specifically, and entering a real degree programme. For that student both offer excellent technical education at a fraction of UK tuition.
Some, mainly at postgraduate level and at selected universities, but daily life and most jobs still need Japanese or Korean.
