Pack documents in hand luggage, medicines with prescriptions, and Nepali-specific items you cannot source. Do not pack winter coats, bedding, kitchen equipment, or bulk food staples — all cheaper in the UK than the baggage cost of carrying them. The single most important thing in your bag is the document folder.

What to Pack

What to Bring from Nepal to the UK — and What to Buy There Instead

Most Nepali students arrive with too many clothes, too little paperwork, and things they could have bought in Britain for less than the excess baggage cost.

The Document Folder Comes First

Never put documents in checked baggage

Bags are delayed. If yours is, and your CAS and TB certificate are in it, you have a problem at the border and at enrolment. Everything below goes in hand luggage, in one folder, with photocopies in a second folder in your checked bag.

  1. Passport with the visa, and your visa decision letter.
  2. CAS statement and university offer letter.
  3. Academic transcripts and certificates, originals.
  4. TB test certificate from the Home Office-approved clinic.
  5. Accommodation confirmation and the address where you are staying.
  6. Financial evidence — the bank statement you used for the visa.
  7. Passport photographs, several.

What Is Genuinely Worth the Weight?

What to bring from Nepal and what to buy in the UK, judged by whether carrying it costs more than replacing it.

Nepali-specific spicesBring a little Hard to source; compact
Winter coatBuy in the UK Bulky, and UK coats suit UK damp cold better

The Winter Coat Mistake

Direct answer

Almost every Nepali student packs a heavy coat and almost none of them needed to. UK cold is damp rather than dry, so a waterproof layer matters more than thickness, and coats are cheap in UK autumn sales. The suitcase space is worth more than the coat. Bring warm layers you can wear on the plane; buy the outer layer there.

Medicines and Restricted Items

Bring prescription medicines with the prescription itself, in original packaging. Some medicines that are freely available in Nepal are controlled in the UK, so check before travelling. Do not pack meat, dairy or fresh produce — those are restricted and will be confiscated. Rules change; verify current UK guidance rather than relying on a blog post, including this one.
