Switching from Student to Skilled Worker Visa in the UK — A Nepali Graduate Guide

This is the step that turns a UK degree into a UK career, and the one most Nepali students plan for least. The salary threshold does most of the deciding.

To switch you need a job offer from a licensed sponsor meeting the £38,700 general salary threshold. Most graduates use the Graduate Route first to find that job. Crucially, time on the Graduate Route does not count toward the 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock — the clock starts when you switch.

This page covers the switch itself. For the Graduate Route you use to get there see the Graduate Route guide; for the alternative settlement route see 10-year long residence.

You need
A job offer from a UKVI-licensed sponsor
General salary threshold
£38,700 per year
Usual sequence
Student → Graduate Route → Skilled Worker
Graduate Route length
2 years if filed on/before 31 Dec 2026; 18 months from 1 Jan 2027
PhD graduates
3 years on the Graduate Route
Settlement
5 qualifying years on Skilled Worker, starting at the switch
Graduate Route time
Does NOT count toward that 5-year clock

What Is the Usual Path from Student to Skilled Worker?

  1. Complete your course and receive confirmation from your university.
  2. Apply for the Graduate Route before your Student visa expires. Two years if the application is filed on or before 31 December 2026; 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates from 1 January 2027. PhD graduates get three years.
  3. Find a role with a licensed sponsor meeting the salary threshold. This is the hard part, and the Graduate Route exists to give you time for it.
  4. Switch to Skilled Worker from inside the UK once you hold the offer and Certificate of Sponsorship.
  5. Accrue five qualifying years on that route toward settlement.
The Graduate Route does not count toward settlement

This is the most expensive misunderstanding in the whole route. Time on the Graduate Route does not count toward the five-year Skilled Worker qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain. The clock starts when you switch. It does count toward the separate 10-year long residence route. How that route works →

What Salary Do You Need?

The general threshold is £38,700 per year, with lower thresholds applying to some occupations and to some new entrants. GOV.UK — Skilled Worker salary requirements

This is where subject choice made two years earlier shows its effect. Graduate salaries in computing, cyber security and finance commonly reach or approach the threshold; hospitality and general business roles commonly do not.

Which Subjects Realistically Reach the Threshold?

Frequently Asked Questions

You need a job offer from a UKVI-licensed sponsor that meets the salary threshold, and a Certificate of Sponsorship from that employer. Most graduates use the Graduate Route first to find the role, then switch from inside the UK.

The general threshold is £38,700 per year, with lower thresholds for some occupations and some new entrants. Your subject choice has a large effect on whether you reach it within the Graduate Route window.

No — not toward the five-year Skilled Worker qualifying period. The clock starts when you switch to Skilled Worker. Graduate Route time does count toward the separate 10-year long residence route.

Two years for applications filed on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates from 1 January 2027. PhD graduates get three years. The trigger is the date you file, not your graduation date.

Yes, if you already have a qualifying job offer. Many graduates do not, which is what the Graduate Route is for. If you do have the offer, switching directly starts your settlement clock sooner.

Yes. The Skilled Worker route permits dependants, unlike the Student route for taught master’s students since January 2024. Dependant rules.

You leave the UK when the Graduate Route expires, or switch to another route you qualify for. This is why subject choice and early job searching matter — the Graduate Route window is shorter from January 2027 than it was.

Why Nepali Students Choose the UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is a popular higher-education destination for Nepali students. A UK bachelor’s degree typically takes three years and a taught master’s one year, which can reduce the total years of study compared with four-year systems elsewhere. Several UK universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL — rank in the global top tier, and more than 40 UK institutions appear in the QS World University Rankings top 200 (QS World University Rankings). Tuition varies by course and university and is listed on each university page; House of Admissions matches each student to programmes that fit their budget and academic profile.

The UK Student Visa, governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules, permits up to 20 hours of paid work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations (UK Home Office, gov.uk/student-visa), helping students offset living costs. The required 28-day maintenance balance is £10,539 for study outside London (≈ NPR 20.5 lakhs at NPR 195/£1) or £13,761 for London (≈ NPR 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files, with a reported 99% approval rate across applications it has supported (self-reported).

Living costs vary by city. Per HESA and UCAS estimates, students in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Loughborough typically budget around NPR 14–22 lakhs per year, compared with NPR 25 lakhs or more in London. Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter instead of IELTS — saving up to NPR 35,000 in examination and preparation costs and 2–3 months of preparation, where the chosen university accepts MOI.

After graduation, the Graduate Route grants unrestricted work with no job offer or sponsor required (UK Home Office, gov.uk/graduate-visa). Its length depends on when the Graduate Route application is filed, not on the course dates: 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years only for those filed on or before 31 December 2026 (PhD graduates keep 3 years either way). Because a student beginning a UK course now will file well after that cutoff, the 18-month figure is the realistic planning number. Graduate Route time does not count toward the standard 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock; the usual path is Graduate Route → switch to the Skilled Worker visa at the £38,700 salary threshold → Indefinite Leave to Remain after five qualifying years on the Skilled Worker route.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016 (self-reported), including 50+ Chevening placements (funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial awards), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Scholarship matching is included in HOA’s free service. Schools, colleges and organisations in Nepal can offer HOA’s UK guidance to their communities through a free partnership arrangement.
