UK May 2027 IntakeA Small Intake — Who It Suits, and Who Should Wait

The May intake is real, and it is small. A limited number of UK universities run a spring start — mostly London institutions and specialist providers, usually for selected postgraduate courses only. It suits a specific kind of applicant very well and everyone else poorly, so this page is written to help you work out which you are rather than to sell you the intake.

May 2027 availability last checked: 22 August 2026. Spring starts are confirmed course by course rather than university-wide, and availability changes as courses fill. HOA confirms whether your specific programme runs a May start, free, before you prepare any documents.

May 2027 UK intake, in short: a small spring intake at a limited number of UK universities, concentrated in London institutions and specialist providers, and usually only for selected postgraduate courses. Chevening does not align to it, Russell Group availability is very limited, and undergraduate options are rare. Applications generally run November 2026 to February 2027. Visa requirements are identical to every other intake: £10,539 outside London or £13,761 for London held 28 consecutive days, the £558 visa fee and £776 per year Immigration Health Surcharge. The Graduate Route gives 18 months, the same as January and September 2027, so post-study work is not a reason to choose this intake over another.

Is the May 2027 Intake Right for You?

The differences between UK intakes are structural, not marketing. May wins on two things and loses on four. Here is the honest comparison.

UK intake comparison for Nepali students. Maintenance requirements and Graduate Route duration are identical across intakes; what differs is choice, funding and competition.

The honest read: May wins on competition and accommodation, and loses on university choice, Russell Group access, Chevening and course range. Those are not close trade-offs — for most applicants the losses matter more. May is the right answer when your specific course runs then at a university you already want, when you missed January and a nine-month wait is genuinely costly, or when May is the first date your funding allows. It is the wrong answer if you are choosing it simply because it is sooner.

Which universities run a May 2027 intake?

A limited number, concentrated in London institutions and specialist providers. Crucially, May availability is decided course by course rather than university-wide: a university running a May start for one programme may not run one for yours. That is why this page does not publish a fixed list — a list assembled in 2026 would be wrong by the time you acted on it, and a wrong list on an intake this small costs you the cycle. HOA confirms whether your specific programme runs a spring start, free, before you prepare any documents.

A caution about May intake lists. You will find sites publishing long lists of “UK universities with May intake”. Treat any undated list as unreliable: spring availability changes course by course and cycle by cycle, and a list copied from a previous year will send you to programmes that no longer run one. Check the university’s own course page for anything you rely on, and confirm the start date in writing before paying a deposit.

May 2027 Application Timeline from Nepal

Working backwards from a May 2027 start. The window is short, so the first step is the one that decides everything: confirming your course actually runs then.

  1. Oct 2026 – Nov 2026

Confirm a May start exists for your course

This decides whether the intake is viable at all. May availability is course by course, not university-wide, so confirm your specific programme runs a spring start before doing anything else. If it does not, January 2027 or September 2027 is your intake, and finding that out now costs you nothing.

  2. Nov 2026 – Feb 2027

    Apply to the confirmed universities

The window is short and places are limited, so treat the earliest date as the real one rather than the published deadline. Because the pool is small, applying to two or three confirmed options rather than one is sensible insurance.

  3. Dec 2026 – Feb 2027

Accept an offer and pay the deposit

Convert your conditional offer with final transcripts and pay the tuition deposit. Keep the receipt: tuition already paid reduces the maintenance you must evidence, and an understated deposit on the CAS is a common error.

  4. Jan 2027 – Feb 2027

Hold the maintenance funds for 28 days

Hold £10,539 outside London or £13,761 for London for 28 consecutive days, counted back from the closing balance date. Because May options concentrate in London, budget for the higher figure unless your offer is from an outside-London campus. Any Nepal Rastra Bank-regulated Class A commercial bank qualifies.

  5. Feb 2027 – Mar 2027

CAS, then NOC, then tuition transfer

Request your CAS and check name order, passport number and course dates against your passport exactly. Then apply for the NOC at noc.moest.gov.np for NPR 2,000, processed in one to five working days. The sequence is fixed: offer, CAS, NOC, transfer, visa.

  6. Mar 2027 – Apr 2027

Submit the UK Student Visa application

Submit with your CAS, financial evidence, TB test certificate and NOC, then attend the VFS biometric appointment. UKVI publishes a three-week decision standard for applications made outside the UK, though Nepali applicants have seen longer waits in recent cycles — build slack into a short window.

  7. Apr 2027 – May 2027

    Pre-departure and arrival

Complete the free HOA pre-departure briefing and arrive one to two weeks before your course start. Spring arrivals usually find accommodation easier to secure than September starters, which is a genuine advantage of this intake.

What the May 2027 Intake Costs from Nepal

Converted at the Nepal Rastra Bank reference rate of NPR 195 per GBP. UKVI converts using the OANDA spot rate on your application date, so confirm before submitting.

Indicative first-year cost for a one-year UK master’s starting May 2027, from Nepal. Because May options concentrate in London, the right-hand column applies more often than for other intakes.

The London premium is bigger than tuition suggests. Beyond higher fees, London carries a maintenance requirement £3,222 higher — roughly NPR 6.3 lakhs more that you must actually hold in an account for 28 days. For a budget-constrained applicant, an outside-London university is usually the difference between a viable application and an impossible one.

May 2027 Intake — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but it is small. A limited number of UK universities run a May or spring start, concentrated in London institutions and specialist providers, and usually only for selected postgraduate courses rather than a full portfolio. It is not comparable to September, which runs at all 153 House of Admissions partner universities, or to January, which runs at roughly 30 to 40. If you are told the May intake gives you a wide choice of UK universities, that is not accurate.

Three groups. Students who missed January 2027 and do not want to wait until September 2027, which is a nine-month gap. Students whose specific course happens to run a May start at a university they already want. And students who need the extra months to raise the maintenance funds or resit IELTS, and for whom May is the first realistic date. If none of those describe you, September 2027 will almost always give a better outcome.

Anyone who wants Chevening, which aligns to September only. Anyone targeting a Russell Group university, since May availability there is very limited. Anyone whose subject is only taught once a year, which covers most clinical, engineering and professionally accredited programmes. And any undergraduate applicant, because May starts are overwhelmingly postgraduate. Forcing a May application in those cases usually means accepting a course you did not want.

Eighteen months for a bachelor's or master's graduate, and three years for a PhD. Duration is set by the date you file the Graduate Route application rather than by your course dates, and applications filed on or after 1 January 2027 fall under the revised 18-month rule. A May 2027 start means filing around mid-2028, so the 18-month version applies. This is identical for January, May and September 2027 starters, so post-study work is not a reason to choose between them.

Most universities running a May start want applications between November 2026 and February 2027, but the operative deadline is earlier than the published one because the visa chain runs behind it. You need an offer, then a CAS, then the NOC from Nepal's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, then the tuition transfer, then a visa application with 28 consecutive days of maintenance evidence already held. Working backwards from a May start, funds should be in place by January 2027.

GBP 10,539 for study outside London or GBP 13,761 for London, held for 28 consecutive days counted back from the closing balance date, with evidence dated within 31 days of applying. That is roughly NPR 20.5 lakhs and NPR 26.8 lakhs at the Nepal Rastra Bank reference rate of NPR 195 per GBP, plus any tuition still unpaid. Because May options are concentrated in London, the higher figure applies more often than it would for other intakes.

University merit awards sometimes, Chevening never. Chevening aligns to the September cycle only, so a May start rules it out for that year. Some universities running a May intake offer the same merit scholarships as their other cycles, but the funds are often already committed by spring, which is a further reason the intake suits students with funding in place rather than those depending on an award.

Rarely. May starts are overwhelmingly postgraduate, and the small number of undergraduate spring starts tend to be at specialist or pathway providers rather than mainstream universities. If you are an undergraduate applicant, September 2027 is the intake to plan for, with January 2027 as the realistic alternative.

No. The Student visa rules, the 28-day maintenance requirement, the NOC obligation and Graduate Route eligibility are identical regardless of when your course starts. What changes with a smaller intake is university choice, not visa treatment. A caseworker assesses your finances, English evidence and sponsorship the same way in any month.

Wait for September if you want Chevening, a Russell Group university, a wider course choice, or if your subject only runs once a year. Take May if your specific course runs then at a university you already want, if you missed January and a nine-month wait is genuinely costly, or if May is the first date your funding realistically allows. House of Admissions will tell you honestly which applies to your profile, including when the answer is that you should wait.

A limited number, concentrated in London institutions and specialist providers, and confirmed course by course rather than as a fixed list. Availability is decided close to the cycle and changes as courses fill, so any list published far in advance goes stale rather than helping. House of Admissions confirms the current open list for your specific subject and grade profile free of charge before you prepare documents.

Yes, at every stage. Consultation, shortlisting, applications, SOP review, scholarship matching, CAS coordination and visa file preparation carry no charge. HOA is paid a referral commission by partner universities when a student enrols, never by the student. You pay only official third-party fees: the GBP 558 visa fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge at GBP 776 per year, the TB test and the NPR 2,000 NOC.

Why Nepali Students Choose the UK for Higher Education — and HOA for Guidance

The United Kingdom is a popular higher-education destination for Nepali students. A UK bachelor’s degree typically takes three years and a taught master’s one year, which can reduce the total years of study compared with four-year systems elsewhere. Several UK universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL — rank in the global top tier, and more than 40 UK institutions appear in the QS World University Rankings top 200 (QS World University Rankings). Tuition varies by course and university and is listed on each university page; House of Admissions matches each student to programmes that fit their budget and academic profile.

The UK Student Visa, governed by Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules, permits up to 20 hours of paid work per week during term time and full-time work during vacations (UK Home Office, gov.uk/student-visa), helping students offset living costs. The required 28-day maintenance balance is £10,539 for study outside London (≈ NPR 20.5 lakhs at NPR 195/£1) or £13,761 for London (≈ NPR 26.8 lakhs), per UK Home Office guidance. House of Admissions prepares complete visa files, with a reported 99% approval rate across applications it has supported (self-reported).

Living costs vary by city. Per HESA and UCAS estimates, students in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Loughborough typically budget around NPR 14–22 lakhs per year, compared with NPR 25 lakhs or more in London. Nepali graduates who studied in English at Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University or Purbanchal University can apply to 25+ UK universities via a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter instead of IELTS — saving up to NPR 35,000 in examination and preparation costs and 2–3 months of preparation, where the chosen university accepts MOI.

After graduation, the Graduate Route grants unrestricted work with no job offer or sponsor required (UK Home Office, gov.uk/graduate-visa). Its length depends on when the Graduate Route application is filed, not on the course dates: 18 months for applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years only for those filed on or before 31 December 2026 (PhD graduates keep 3 years either way). Because a student beginning a UK course now will file well after that cutoff, the 18-month figure is the realistic planning number. Graduate Route time does not count toward the standard 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock; the usual path is Graduate Route → switch to the Skilled Worker visa at the £38,700 salary threshold → Indefinite Leave to Remain after five qualifying years on the Skilled Worker route.

House of Admissions has secured £2M+ in scholarships for Nepali students since 2016 (self-reported), including 50+ Chevening placements (funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000 partial awards), Commonwealth Scholarships (fully funded), and university merit awards of £2,000–£10,000+. Scholarship matching is included in HOA’s free service. Schools, colleges and organisations in Nepal can offer HOA’s UK guidance to their communities through a free partnership arrangement.
