Chevening is the UK government's flagship scholarship. Here's how Nepali students can win it.
Chevening is the UK government's flagship scholarship. Here's how Nepali students can win it.
What Is the Chevening Scholarship?
Chevening is the UK government's prestigious international scholarship programme funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). It offers full funding for a one-year master's degree at any eligible UK university.
More than 1,500 scholarships are awarded globally each year, and Nepal has a strong allocation. Chevening scholars are chosen for their leadership potential, not just academic excellence.
What Does Chevening Cover?
- Full tuition fees (at your chosen UK university)
- Return economy airfare from Nepal to the UK
- Monthly stipend for living costs (approximately £1,200–1,400/month depending on location)
- Travel allowance within the UK for course-related purposes
- Dissertation/thesis allowance
- Arrival and departure allowance
Essentially, Chevening is a fully-funded scholarship. You will not need parental financial support while in the UK.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a citizen of Nepal (or a country eligible for Chevening)
- Hold a bachelor's degree that enables entry to a UK postgraduate programme
- Have at least 2 years of work experience (this is a firm requirement — new graduates are not eligible)
- Apply to three different UK universities (you must have at least one unconditional offer before the scholarship is confirmed)
- Meet the English language requirements of your chosen universities
- Commit to returning to Nepal for at least 2 years after completing the scholarship
Application Timeline (2026 Entry)
- August — applications open

- January–February — shortlisted candidates notified
- March–April — interviews in Kathmandu

Writing Winning Chevening Essays
The Chevening application includes four essays (each around 500 words) covering:
- Leadership and influence — give specific examples of leading others or driving change
- Networking — demonstrate your ability to build and use professional networks
- UK study plans — why a UK master's specifically, and why this course
- Career plan — your vision for contributing to Nepal after returning
The biggest mistake applicants make is writing generic essays. Chevening wants stories, not statements. Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
